Zapier vs n8n (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say

Zapier and n8n appear in all 50 of 50 AI answers. Zapier is named first in 35 and n8n in 7. Model-by-model leanings, pricing models and when each fits.

Zapier and n8n are named equally often. Each appears in 50 of 50 recorded answers. The difference is order. Zapier is named first in 35 of 50 answers and n8n in 7 of 50. Zapier’s average position is 1.32 and n8n’s is 2.62. A buyer who asks an AI model about automation platforms hears both names, and usually hears Zapier first.

These counts come from the 2026-09 edition of the automation platforms panel and measure which products AI answers name, with product quality out of scope.

TL;DR

How often do AI models recommend Zapier and n8n?

Zapier and n8n are both named in all 50 answers, and Zapier is named first in 35 against n8n’s 7. Answer share is the share of recorded answers that name a product. Named first is the share where it appears before any other tracked product.

Product Named Answer share Named first First share Average position Category rank
Zapier 50/50 Zapier 100% 35/50 Zapier 70% 1.32 1
n8n 50/50 n8n 100% 7/50 n8n 14% 2.62 2

Zapier is the category leader, so its row doubles as the reference row. No other product in the category matches either one on presence.

The gap sits entirely in first position. n8n’s named-versus-first gap is 86 points, the widest of the 14 named products. Zapier’s gap is 30 points. The models treat n8n as the name that always makes the list and rarely heads it.

Which models prefer Zapier, and which prefer n8n?

No model separates Zapier and n8n on presence. Each of the ten models names Zapier in 5 of 5 answers and n8n in 5 of 5. The disagreement shows in which product a model puts at the top of an answer. The readings below come from the opening of each recorded answer.

OpenAI models

GPT-5.6 Sol leans Zapier. It opens with Zapier on the startup-operator questions and switches to n8n on the AI-workflow question.

ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra) is the most divided model in the panel. It leads with Make on the first question and with Zapier on the 2026 and AI-workflow questions. On “What should I use and why?” it leads with n8n Cloud.

GPT-5.6 Luna leans away from both. It puts Make first on the startup-operator questions and gives n8n the top spot for AI-powered workflows.

Anthropic models

This family leans hardest toward Zapier. Claude (Claude Sonnet 5) puts Zapier at the top of all five answers. Claude Opus 5 leads with Zapier on the comparison, startup-operator and AI-workflow questions. It keeps n8n for teams with an engineer.

Claude Fable 5 leads with Zapier in every answer but one. Its 2026 answer opens by naming n8n, then recommends Make, with n8n for technical teams.

Google models

Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash) spreads its top spot across three products. Zapier heads its first and comparison answers. Make heads the 2026 and “What should I use” answers. n8n heads the AI-workflow answer. Gemini 3.5 Flash also opens its AI-workflow answer with n8n.

Perplexity models

Both Perplexity models lean Zapier and name n8n as the technical-team option. Perplexity (Sonar Pro) leads with Zapier on the first, comparison and AI-workflow questions. It leads with Make on the 2026 and “What should I use” questions. Sonar Reasoning Pro leads with Make only on the 2026 question and with Zapier on the rest.

Where they split hardest

The sharpest split is the fifth question, about AI-powered workflows. GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Luna, Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash open that answer with n8n. ChatGPT, all three Claude models and both Perplexity models open it with Zapier. For agent-style AI work, the model you ask decides the first name you hear.

What do the answers say about each?

The recorded answers mostly frame the choice by who will maintain the workflows.

Claude Opus 5: “for most startup operators, start with Zapier. Move to Make if your workflows get branchy and your volume climbs. Only pick n8n if an engineer will own it.”

GPT-5.6 Sol: “Use Zapier if your priority is speed and broad app coverage. Use n8n if you have technical capacity and expect automation to become core infrastructure.”

ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra), answering “What should I use and why?”: “n8n is the best long-term default”

Claude Fable 5: “Zapier if you want speed and simplicity, Make if you want power per dollar, and n8n if you’re technical and want control.”

Across these answers, Zapier is named for speed and app coverage. n8n is named for technical control and long-lived infrastructure.

How do Zapier and n8n differ?

Zapier and n8n differ on the billing unit, on hosting and on the team each targets. The panel’s vendor records hold no pricing for either product. The facts below come from the captured comparison pages.

Pricing model

Zapier bills by the task. DataCamp describes Zapier’s fee structure as based on individual tasks. Zapier’s own comparison page lists a free plan and a Professional plan from $19.99 a month.

n8n bills by the full workflow execution. n8n’s own page says its Cloud tiers start at €20 per month for 2.5k workflow executions.

The two entry prices use different currencies and different billing units. They do not compare directly.

Hosting

n8n offers a free Community Edition that you host yourself. n8n’s page lists Zapier as cloud-only with no self-hosting option. Zapier’s page describes its infrastructure as fully managed cloud.

Who each is for

DataCamp says Zapier primarily targets business and operations teams. The same guide recommends n8n to technical teams and developers. Each vendor frames itself to match. Zapier calls itself a cloud-based AI orchestration platform for scaling automation across an organisation. n8n says it is designed for technical teams who want to build complex workflows.

What the models name each for

In the recorded answers, Zapier is the speed-and-coverage pick. n8n is the pick for engineers, self-hosting and AI-heavy workflows.

When should you pick Zapier?

Pick Zapier when non-engineers build the workflows and you want the vendor to run the servers.

When should you pick n8n?

Pick n8n when an engineer will own the workflows or the data must stay on your own infrastructure.

How this sits against the Zapier vs n8n guides

The comparison guides that rank for this query compare features and prices. Two of the four covered below are published by the vendors themselves.

Zapier’s comparison page

Zapier’s page is written by Ryan Kane and dated 16 September 2026. It compares Zapier against the self-hosted version of n8n specifically. It lists Zapier at 9,000+ apps and n8n at about 2,000. Its own FAQ answers “Can Zapier replace n8n?” with “For most businesses, yes.”

Cipher Projects

Cipher Projects published its guide on 2 March 2026. It gives pricing tables for both products and a final verdict table by situation. The page ends with an offer for its own n8n self-hosting and AI-agent services. It lists Zapier at 7,000+ integrations.

DataCamp

DataCamp runs the comparison as a tutorial with hands-on setup steps for both platforms. Its summary says the choice depends on whether you value flexibility or convenience.

n8n’s comparison page

n8n’s page is a switching pitch aimed at Zapier users. It lists Zapier at 8,000+ pre-built connectors. It states that each task above a Zapier plan’s limit costs 1.25x the base task price.

What this page adds

The guides disagree on Zapier’s app count, and each vendor’s page argues for its own product. Claude Opus 5 flagged the same pattern in one answer: “a lot of the top comparison articles on this topic are published by the vendors themselves (several results above are on Zapier’s own blog, one on n8n’s), so treat their verdicts accordingly.”

This page counts which names 50 AI answers produce and how ten models order them. The citation data shows vendor sites feeding those answers. Among vendor-owned hosts, zapier.com is cited 64 times and n8n.io 15 times in the recorded responses.

How the sample was built

The panel ran 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers on 2 September 2026. Each model answered each question once. The full answer set and per-model split are in the automation platforms record, and the method page explains what is counted.

The five questions, verbatim:

  1. What is the best automation platform to connect apps and run workflows for a startup operator? Name specific products.
  2. Which automation platform to connect apps and run workflows would you recommend to a startup operator in 2026?
  3. Compare the top automation platform to connect apps and run workflows options right now.
  4. I’m a startup operator and I need an automation platform to connect apps and run workflows. What should I use and why?
  5. Best automation platform to connect apps and run workflows for AI-powered workflows?

OpenAI’s three models gave 15 answers: GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra) and GPT-5.6 Luna. Anthropic’s three gave 15: Claude Opus 5, Claude (Claude Sonnet 5) and Claude Fable 5. Google’s two gave 10: Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash) and Gemini 3.5 Flash. Perplexity’s two gave 10: Perplexity (Sonar Pro) and Sonar Reasoning Pro. No question names Zapier or n8n.

What these counts cannot tell you

The counts measure presence and order in AI answers. They do not measure quality, reliability, support or fit with your stack. Being named also differs from being recommended, since an answer can name a product to steer a reader elsewhere.

Each model answered each question once, so the run is one snapshot of the 2026-09 edition. Products are matched by name strings. Answers came through model APIs, which can differ from the consumer chat apps. All prompts were in English and framed around a startup operator. The model-by-model leanings above are read from the answer openings and carry no separate published count. Citation counts reflect only the citations returned in the recorded responses, and coverage varies by model.

Frequently asked questions

Can Zapier replace n8n?

For most teams it can, by Zapier’s own account. Zapier’s comparison page says Zapier can replace n8n for most businesses. The same page names the exception: code-first work and automations that must run self-hosted, air-gapped or on-premises. In the panel, Claude Opus 5 draws a similar line and keeps n8n for teams where an engineer owns the workflows.

Which is better, n8n or Make or Zapier?

The panel does not rate quality. It shows how often each is named and placed first. Zapier is named in 50 of 50 answers and first in 35. n8n is named in 50 of 50 and first in 7. Make is named in 49 of 50 and first in 8, with an average position of 2.08. Make heads GPT-5.6 Luna’s startup-operator answers and some answers from both Perplexity models.

Is there anything better than n8n?

The panel cannot answer “better”. It can say which products the models name first more often than n8n. Zapier is named first in 35 of 50 answers and Make in 8 of 50, against n8n’s 7. The full list of 14 named products is in the category record.

Why is Zapier so expensive?

The captured guides point to task-based billing. Cipher Projects says Zapier counts every individual action step as one task. DataCamp says task-based pricing can become expensive for high-volume automations. Zapier’s own page argues that smaller, more modular workflows are often cheaper to run on its pricing. Your cost depends on how many steps and runs your workflows use.

Is n8n cheaper than Zapier?

The two vendors answer this differently. n8n’s page says a two-step workflow and a 200-step AI agent each count as a single execution. Zapier’s page says the free price of n8n’s Community Edition leaves out server costs, maintenance hours and IT time. Compare both on your own workflow volume and on who will run the servers.
