n8n vs Zapier (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say

n8n and Zapier are each named in 29 of 50 AI answers. See which of 10 models lean each way, how pricing differs, and when each one fits.

n8n and Zapier are level on presence. AI models named each one in 29 of 50 recorded answers. n8n was named first in 8 of 50 answers and Zapier in 6 of 50, so n8n holds a narrow edge at the top of answers. The real difference is which model you ask. n8n leads in four of the ten models, Zapier leads in three, and three are tied.

This page counts what AI answers name when buyers ask about AI agent builders. It does not rate either product.

TL;DR

How often do AI models recommend n8n and Zapier?

They are named equally often, and n8n is placed first slightly more often. The table shows both products, with the category leader, Lindy, as a reference row.

Product Named Answer share Named first First share Average position Category rank
n8n 29/50 n8n 58% 8/50 n8n 16% 3.72 2nd of 20
Zapier 29/50 Zapier 58% 6/50 Zapier 12% 3.17 3rd of 20
Lindy (category leader, reference) 33/50 Lindy 66% 9/50 Lindy 18% 3.03 1st of 20

Answer share is the share of the 50 answers that named the product. Named first counts the answers where it appeared before any other tracked product. Average position is where the product sits among the tracked names in an answer that includes it. A lower number means earlier.

The tie on names hides two signals that point in opposite directions. n8n takes the first slot in 8 answers to Zapier’s 6. Zapier, when it is named, sits earlier in the list on average: 3.17 against 3.72.

Both products are usually one option among several rather than the lead pick. Zapier’s gap between named share and first share is 46 points. n8n’s is 42 points. The figure sheet lists n8n second and Zapier third among the 20 named products. Their named counts are equal and n8n holds more first mentions.

Which models prefer n8n, and which prefer Zapier?

n8n leads in four models, Zapier leads in three, and three models name them equally. Each cell counts how many of that model’s 5 answers named the product.

Model Family n8n Zapier Leans to
GPT-5.6 Sol OpenAI 3/5 2/5 n8n
ChatGPT OpenAI 1/5 4/5 Zapier
GPT-5.6 Luna OpenAI 3/5 3/5 Level
Claude Opus 5 Anthropic 5/5 3/5 n8n
Claude Anthropic 3/5 3/5 Level
Claude Fable 5 Anthropic 4/5 4/5 Level
Gemini Google 4/5 2/5 n8n
Gemini 3.5 Flash Google 3/5 4/5 Zapier
Perplexity Perplexity 3/5 1/5 n8n
Sonar Reasoning Pro Perplexity 0/5 3/5 Zapier

The sharpest split sits inside OpenAI. ChatGPT names Zapier in 4 of 5 answers and n8n in 1. Zapier is ChatGPT’s most-named product in the whole category, at Zapier 80%. GPT-5.6 Sol goes the other way. Its most-named product is n8n, at n8n 60%. Across the three OpenAI models the family figure is Zapier 60% against n8n 46.7%.

Anthropic leans to n8n. Claude Opus 5 names n8n in every answer and Zapier in 3 of 5. Claude and Claude Fable 5 are level. The family figure is n8n 80% against Zapier 66.7%. Neither product tops any Claude model’s list, though. Lindy is the most-named product for all three.

Google splits by model. Gemini names n8n in 4 of 5 answers and Zapier in 2. Gemini 3.5 Flash reverses that, and Zapier is its most-named product at Zapier 80%. The family figure still favours n8n: n8n 70% against Zapier 60%.

The Perplexity family points in two directions. Perplexity names n8n in 3 of 5 answers and Zapier in 1. Sonar Reasoning Pro names Zapier in 3 of 5 and n8n in none. The family figure is Zapier 40%, and n8n does not reach that family’s top five.

The practical reading is simple. If your buyers research with ChatGPT, Gemini 3.5 Flash or Sonar Reasoning Pro, Zapier is the name more likely to reach them. With Claude Opus 5, Gemini, GPT-5.6 Sol or Perplexity, n8n is.

What do the answers say about each?

The answers name n8n for control and a path to self-hosting. They name Zapier for integration reach and for setup without engineers. Four short quotes from the recorded answers:

“You can begin with the managed service and later self-host the Community Edition if cost, privacy, or control becomes important.” (GPT-5.6 Sol, recommending n8n Cloud)

“A visual automation platform with strong native AI agent nodes.” (Gemini, describing n8n)

“Zapier’s large integration catalog is its decisive advantage for a small team.” (ChatGPT, recommending Zapier Agents)

“For a small or non-technical team, the strongest all-around options right now are Zapier Agents, Gumloop, Lindy, Taskade Agents, Airtable’s AI builder, StackAI, Voiceflow, and Pickaxe” (Sonar Reasoning Pro, opening its comparison)

Two patterns matter. Several answers name Zapier’s agent products, Zapier Agents and AI by Zapier, rather than the automation platform alone. The panel counts each of those as Zapier. GPT-5.6 Luna frames n8n as an orchestration layer and headlines its pick as n8n plus a model API.

How do n8n and Zapier differ?

They differ on billing unit, hosting and intended user. The panel records no pricing for either product. Every figure in this section comes from a captured page, in that page’s own currency.

Pricing model

n8n charges per full workflow execution, with no limit on the number of workflows, tasks or steps. Its own page says n8n Cloud tiers start at €20 per month for 2.5k workflow executions. Cipher Projects lists the n8n Starter cloud plan at $20 a month for 2,500 executions. The Community Edition can be self-hosted at no extra cost.

Zapier’s page lists a Free plan, Professional from $19.99 a month and Team at $69 a month for 25 users. Its Enterprise plan has custom pricing. Cipher Projects lists 750 tasks a month on the Professional plan. The same page records that Zapier counts every individual action step as one task.

Each vendor uses the billing unit as an argument. n8n’s page says a simple two-step workflow and a complex 200-step agent both count as a single execution. Zapier’s page argues that per-execution billing pushes teams toward fewer, bigger workflows. No captured page states whether its prices include tax.

Who each is for

n8n describes itself as designed for technical teams who want to build complex workflows. Zapier’s page describes n8n as built for technical teams that want full infrastructure control.

Zapier describes itself as a cloud-based AI orchestration platform that helps businesses scale automation and AI across their whole organisation. n8n’s page calls Zapier an excellent choice for non-technical users looking to automate simple tasks. DataCamp’s comparison puts developers and data teams on the n8n side and business users and non-technical teams on the Zapier side.

Hosting

n8n can run on your own server or on n8n Cloud. n8n says its cloud runs in the Azure Germany West Central data centre in Frankfurt. Zapier cannot be self-hosted. Zapier presents its infrastructure as fully managed, with no servers or containers to run. n8n’s page states that Zapier hosts data on AWS servers in the United States.

Integration counts

The integration counts depend on who is counting. Zapier’s page claims 9,000+ apps for Zapier and about 2,000 for n8n. n8n’s page claims 1000+ integrations for n8n and 8,000+ for Zapier. Cipher Projects counts 400+ native n8n nodes plus 600+ community nodes, against 7,000+ Zapier apps.

When should you pick n8n?

Pick n8n when the models your buyers use lean to it, or when self-hosting is a requirement. Each reason below is a count or a captured claim.

When should you pick Zapier?

Pick Zapier when your buyers research in ChatGPT, Gemini 3.5 Flash or Sonar Reasoning Pro, or when nobody on the team will run infrastructure. Each reason below is a count or a captured claim.

How this sits against the n8n vs Zapier guides

Four comparison pages that rank for this query in Australia were captured. Two of them are written by the vendors.

Zapier’s own page is by Ryan Kane and dated 16 September 2026. It argues that Zapier makes automation easier to scale without infrastructure overhead. It compares Zapier against self-hosted n8n specifically, not n8n Cloud. It carries customer testimonials that favour Zapier.

n8n’s own page is written for readers who have hit limits with Zapier’s flexibility, feature gating or task-based costs. It argues for execution-based pricing, self-hosting and developer control.

DataCamp’s guide, by Tim Lu, is a tutorial with hands-on setup steps for both products. It concludes that the right choice depends on AI integration goals, data governance, budget and team expertise. The page also promotes DataCamp courses, including n8n code-alongs.

Cipher Projects’ page, dated March 2, 2026, gives plan-by-plan pricing and a migration guide from Zapier to n8n. It closes with an offer for n8n self-hosting and AI agent workflow services.

All four pages compare features and prices. None of them reports what AI models say when a buyer asks. This page adds that count, and the model-by-model split above appears on none of the captured pages.

How the sample was built

The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, from the 2026-09 edition of the AI agent builders category. Every model received the same five questions:

  1. What is the best platform to build AI agents without a big engineering team for a startup? Name specific products.
  2. Which platform to build AI agents without a big engineering team would you recommend to a startup in 2026?
  3. Compare the top platform to build AI agents without a big engineering team options right now.
  4. I’m a startup and I need a platform to build AI agents without a big engineering team. What should I use and why?
  5. Best platform to build AI agents without a big engineering team for customer support agents?

The OpenAI family is GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 Luna, with 15 answers. The Anthropic family is Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5, with 15 answers. The Google family is Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash, with 10 answers. The Perplexity family is Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro, with 10 answers. The category tracks 21 vendors, and 20 were named.

The full category table is at AI agent builders. Each product’s record is at n8n and Zapier. The counting rules are on the method page.

What these counts cannot tell you

These counts measure presence in AI answers. They say nothing about product quality, uptime, support, pricing fairness or fit with your stack. Being named also differs from being recommended, because an answer can list a product only to warn against it.

Each model gave one answer per question, so a single answer moves a model’s count by one of five. The figures are one dated snapshot, the 2026-09 edition. The prompts ask about building AI agents without a big engineering team. A question about general workflow automation could produce different names. Names are matched as strings, so Zapier Agents counts as Zapier. Answers came through model APIs and can differ from consumer chat apps. All prompts were in English. No vendor can pay to appear, be reordered or be removed.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, n8n or Make or Zapier?

The panel does not measure which is better. It counts how often AI answers name each one. n8n and Zapier are each named in 29 of 50 answers. Make is named in 18 of 50 (Make 36%) and is never named first (Make 0%). Both n8n and Zapier are named more often than Make in this category.

Is anything better than n8n?

Quality is outside this measurement. On names, one product is ahead of n8n: Lindy, named in 33 of 50 answers and first in 9 of 50. Lindy is the most-named product for six of the ten models. n8n is the most-named product for one, GPT-5.6 Sol.

Is n8n basically a power automate?

This panel cannot compare them. Microsoft Power Automate is not a tracked vendor in the AI agent builders category, so it has no count here. n8n describes itself as a low-code, source-available and self-hostable AI workflow builder.

What is better than Zapier?

The panel does not rank quality. On names, Lindy is ahead of Zapier, at 33 of 50 against 29, and n8n is level. Zapier is the most-named product for two of the ten models, ChatGPT and Gemini 3.5 Flash. Voiceflow tops GPT-5.6 Luna, n8n tops GPT-5.6 Sol, and Lindy tops the other six.

Is n8n cheaper than Zapier?

The panel does not measure price, and the vendors argue this point in opposite directions. The billing units differ, so monthly list prices do not compare directly. Zapier’s page argues that self-hosted n8n carries server, maintenance and IT costs that its free sticker price leaves out. n8n’s page argues that per-task billing makes complex Zapier workflows cost more as they grow.

Do the answers mean Zapier’s automation platform or its agent product?

Both count as Zapier. The recorded answers name Zapier Agents and AI by Zapier as well as Zapier itself, and the panel matches each to Zapier. ChatGPT, the model that names Zapier most often, recommends the agent products by name.
