Clay vs Instantly (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say

Clay was named in 44 of 50 AI answers and first in 7. Instantly was named in 41 and first in 1. The model-by-model split, and when each one fits.

The models name Clay slightly more often than Instantly. Clay was named in 44 of 50 recorded AI answers and named first in 7. Instantly was named in 41 of 50 and named first in 1. The named counts are close. The named-first counts are far apart.

This page reports what 10 AI models said in the September 2026 edition, model by model, and where each product fits on the captured record. It does not judge which product is better.

TL;DR

How often do AI models recommend Clay and Instantly?

Clay is named in 44 of 50 answers and Instantly in 41 of 50, so both appear in most answers and Clay appears slightly more often. Apollo, the category leader, is the reference row.

Product Named Answer share Named first First share Average position Category rank
Apollo (category leader, reference) 50/50 100% 32/50 64% 1.88 1
Clay 44/50 88% 7/50 14% 2.73 2
Instantly 41/50 82% 1/50 2% 3.98 3

Answer share is the share of the 50 answers that named the product. Named first counts the answers where it appeared before any other tracked product. Average position is where it sat in the order of tracked products, across the answers that named it.

The real gap is position, not presence. Clay sits earlier in the answers that name it, at 2.73 against 3.98. Instantly carries the widest named-versus-first gap in the category, 80 points. Clay’s gap is 74 points. In practice, the models almost always list Instantly after another tool. Apollo leads both on every measure in the table. The full category record, with every answer, is at the AI outbound index.

Which models prefer Clay, and which prefer Instantly?

The OpenAI and Anthropic models name Clay more often, the Perplexity models name Instantly more often, and the Google models name both in every answer. Each model answered the same five prompts.

Model Family Clay Instantly
GPT-5.6 Sol OpenAI 5/5 5/5
ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra) OpenAI 5/5 3/5
GPT-5.6 Luna OpenAI 5/5 5/5
Claude Opus 5 Anthropic 5/5 3/5
Claude (Claude Sonnet 5) Anthropic 4/5 2/5
Claude Fable 5 Anthropic 5/5 4/5
Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash) Google 5/5 5/5
Gemini 3.5 Flash Google 5/5 5/5
Perplexity (Sonar Pro) Perplexity 4/5 5/5
Sonar Reasoning Pro Perplexity 1/5 4/5

OpenAI. GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna named both products in all five answers. ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra) is the split inside the family: Clay in 5 of 5, Instantly in 3 of 5. Across the family’s 15 answers, the shares are Clay (100% of them) and Instantly (86.7% of them).

Anthropic. This is the family with the clearest lean to Clay. Every Anthropic model named Clay at least as often as Instantly. Claude Sonnet 5 named Clay in 4 of 5 answers and Instantly in 2 of 5. Claude Opus 5 named Clay in all five and Instantly in 3. Across the family’s 15 answers, Clay (93.3%) sits well ahead of Instantly (60%).

Google. Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash named both products in every answer. Across the family’s 10 answers, Clay 100% and Instantly 100%. Nothing separates them here.

Perplexity. The lean reverses. Sonar Pro named Instantly in all five answers and Clay in 4. Sonar Reasoning Pro named Instantly in 4 of 5 and Clay in only 1 of 5. That is the sharpest disagreement on the page. Across the family’s 10 answers, Instantly (90%) is well ahead of Clay (50%).

The reading for a buyer is simple. A question asked in Claude is more likely to surface Clay than Instantly. The same question asked in Perplexity is more likely to surface Instantly. Both products were named by all ten models at least once.

What do the answers say about each?

The answers tend to name Clay for list building and Instantly for sending. Short passages from the recorded answers show the pattern.

“For a founder doing outbound, Clay is my top pick” (GPT-5.6 Sol)

“Add Clay only after you know your ICP and outbound motion are working.” (GPT-5.6 Luna)

“Best default for an early-stage startup: Instantly.” (ChatGPT, GPT-5.6 Terra)

“if your priority is pure cold-email sending at scale, Instantly is the better fit.” (Perplexity, Sonar Pro)

The OpenAI quotes about Clay pull in different directions. GPT-5.6 Sol put Clay at the top for a founder. GPT-5.6 Luna told the same kind of founder to wait until the outbound motion works. Both Instantly quotes answer the same prompt, the one about automating cold email at a startup. The panel does not split counts by prompt, so that pairing describes these answers only. It is not a measured pattern.

How do Clay and Instantly differ?

The captured material places Clay upstream, where lists are built and enriched, and Instantly downstream, where cold email goes out. GPT-5.6 Sol drew the same line when it sorted the category into layers. It put Clay under “Prospecting data and enrichment” and Instantly under “High-volume email infrastructure”.

Pricing model. Clay’s own page says its enrichment waterfall only charges credits when a provider returns a hit. A Clay tutorial on YouTube adds that AI qualification steps can run on OpenAI credits instead of Clay credits. No Instantly price is recorded in any captured page, and no Instantly-authored page was captured. Neither vendor’s pricing page is in the capture.

Who each is for. Clay’s page presents it as trusted by GTM Ops and RevOps teams. That is the vendor’s own description. For Instantly, a Leadfeeder playbook describes it as enabling high-volume cold email outreach with personalisation and automated follow-ups. A paid press release calls Instantly.ai known for its expertise in email marketing automation.

Where they overlap. Clay also sends. Its site lists a native sequencer alongside the option to automate messaging. So the line between the two is not absolute. The captured record holds no Instantly claim about list building or enrichment.

When should you pick Clay?

Pick Clay when the job is finding and enriching the right accounts, and when the models your team consults are OpenAI or Anthropic models. Those are the conditions under which the counts and the record favour it.

When should you pick Instantly?

Pick Instantly when the list already exists and the job is sending cold email at volume, and when the research happens in Perplexity. That is where the counts and the record place it.

How this sits against the Clay vs Instantly guides

None of the captured pages ranking for “Clay vs Instantly” compares the two as rivals. Each treats them as parts of one workflow, and each has a commercial tie to at least one of the two vendors.

Clay’s tool page. It is published on clay.com. It is a template for finding companies that need cleaning services, not a comparison. It names Instantly only as a destination for the finished list.

The goerie.com press release. The page says it is press release content distributed by XPR Media as part of a paid service. It announces that the marketing firm Cobalt Keys is a certified partner of both Clay.com and Instantly.ai. It carries no comparison.

The Leadfeeder playbook. Its author runs Lead Assassin, described as the first Certified Clay Agency based in the Philippines. The playbook chains Leadfeeder, Clay, Heyreach, Instantly and Slack into one system.

Cody Carnes’ YouTube tutorial. It builds and scores a lead list in Clay before any email goes out. Its description carries a Clay sign-up link with a referral code and a free-credits offer.

A LinkedIn post that also ranks for the query could not be fetched, so it is not described here.

Those pages show how practitioners wire the two tools together. This page adds what they do not have: a count of how often ten AI models name each product, and which models lean which way.

How the sample was built

The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, one answer per model and prompt, in the September 2026 edition of the AI outbound category. No prompt names Clay or Instantly. The five questions, verbatim:

  1. What is the best AI outbound sales or prospecting tool for a founder doing outbound? Name specific products.
  2. Which AI outbound sales or prospecting tool would you recommend to a founder doing outbound in 2026?
  3. Compare the top AI outbound sales or prospecting tool options right now.
  4. I’m a founder doing outbound and I need an AI outbound sales or prospecting tool. What should I use and why?
  5. Best AI outbound sales or prospecting tool to automate cold email at a startup?

The models come from these families. OpenAI: GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra) and GPT-5.6 Luna, 15 answers. Anthropic: Claude Opus 5, Claude (Claude Sonnet 5) and Claude Fable 5, 15 answers. Google: Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash) and Gemini 3.5 Flash, 10 answers. Perplexity: Sonar Pro and Sonar Reasoning Pro, 10 answers. Every model ran with web search on. The full procedure is on the method page.

What these counts cannot tell you

The counts measure how often AI answers name each product. They say nothing about which product is better, and that is the limit of this comparison.

Being named is not the same as being recommended. An answer can name a product only to warn against it. Each model gave one answer per prompt, so a single answer can move a model’s count by one. The figures are one dated snapshot from the September 2026 edition. Names are matched as strings, so “Instantly.ai” counts as Instantly. The answers came through the models’ APIs and can differ from what a consumer chat app shows. The prompts were in English. None of the prompts asked the models to compare these two products directly. The captured search results held no head-to-head guide and no Instantly-authored page. The counting rules are set out on the method page.

Frequently asked questions

Why use Instantly?

Teams use Instantly to run cold email sequences once a list exists. In the Leadfeeder playbook, enriched leads are pushed into Instantly, where custom sequences nurture them and follow-ups run automatically. In the panel, 41 of 50 answers named it, and Sonar Pro named it in all five of its answers.

Can Clay and Instantly be used together?

Yes. Clay’s page says its native integrations push an enriched, verified list directly into Smartlead or Instantly, with no manual export. The Leadfeeder playbook runs them in the same order, with Clay enriching the leads before Instantly sends the sequences.

Is Clay or Instantly cheaper?

The captured record cannot answer that. No Instantly price was captured, and Clay’s captured page describes credit charges, not a plan price. Check both vendors’ current pricing pages before deciding. The panel counts names, not prices.
