Best Cline Alternatives (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Recommend
Cline is named in 30 of 50 AI answers and never first. The six alternatives ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity models name, in measured order.
Cline is named in 30 of 50 recorded AI answers (Cline 60%) and first in none. That places it fifth of the 12 coding agents the models named. The alternatives named most often are Cursor, Claude Code and GitHub Copilot, each in 49 of 50 answers. Aider (26), Windsurf (21) and Devin (17) sit below Cline. The counts come from ten ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity models answering five fixed buyer questions.

Where does Cline sit in AI answers?
Cline is fifth of the 12 coding agents the models named: well known, and never the opening answer.
Measured: named 30 of 50 (Cline 60%), first 0 of 50 (Cline 0%), average position 5.6.
Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and Codex rank above it. Codex is named in 39 of 50 answers and sits in the full category record. Cline’s named-versus-first gap is 60 points, the widest of any product the models never put first.
Its reach depends on the model. Claude Opus 5, Claude Fable 5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash name it in all 5 answers. ChatGPT names it in none. By family, the Anthropic models give Cline 86.7% of their 15 answers and the Google models give Cline 90% of their 10.
The models place Cline in the top group, then list it after the leaders. Claude Fable 5 opened one answer with “The front-runners for 2026 are Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, and Cline”. The same model gave each tool a one-line job: “Windsurf for budget-conscious AI-native editing, Cline for open-source agents inside VS Code, Aider for git-native pair programming”. Gemini 3.5 Flash put Cline in an open-source group with Aider and summed the group up as “Best for customization, privacy, and cost-control.”
So the models name Cline for openness, customization and cost control. The Cline vendor record holds every answer that names it.
1. Cursor
Pick Cursor instead of Cline if you want the product the models name first most often and you are ready to work in a separate AI editor.
Measured: named 49 of 50 (Cursor 98%), first 24 of 50 (Cursor 48%), average position 1.8.
Cursor is the default opening answer. It is the leading name for nine of the ten models. GPT-5.6 Sol is the one exception. Every model names Cursor in at least 4 of its 5 answers, so its reach barely moves with the assistant you ask. That holds for ChatGPT too, the model that leaves Cline out.
The move also changes your editor.

A Cline user who switches gets a full AI editor and the product the panel most often names first.

2. Claude Code
Pick Claude Code instead of Cline if you prefer the terminal and want the second most common opening answer.
Measured: named 49 of 50 (Claude Code 98%), first 19 of 50 (Claude Code 38%), average position 1.88.
Claude Code is the other product the models open with. GPT-5.6 Sol leads with it, the only model where Cursor is not the leading name. Nine of the ten models name it in every answer.
Its named-versus-first gap is 60 points, the same size as Cline’s. The difference is height. Claude Code opens 19 answers. Cline opens none.

3. GitHub Copilot
Pick GitHub Copilot instead of Cline if broad presence matters more to you than first place. It reaches 49 of 50 answers.
Measured: named 49 of 50 (GitHub Copilot 98%), first 2 of 50 (GitHub Copilot 4%), average position 3.76.
The models list GitHub Copilot and then move past it. Its 94-point gap between named and named first is the widest in the category. It is strongest with the OpenAI models. Across that family’s 15 answers the shares are GitHub Copilot 100%, Cursor 93.3% and Claude Code 93.3%.

For a Cline user, the draw is staying inside an existing editor while moving to a product nearly every answer names. It sits earlier in the answers too, at an average position of 3.76 against Cline’s 5.6.

Pick Aider instead of Cline if you want the alternative the models treat most like Cline, run from the terminal.
Measured: named 26 of 50 (Aider 52%), first 0 of 50 (Aider 0%), average position 6.
Aider is Cline’s nearest neighbour on the panel. Neither is ever named first. Claude Opus 5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash name both in all 5 answers. ChatGPT names neither. Gemini 3.5 Flash groups the two in the same open-source section, and Claude Fable 5 gives Aider its own job: git-native pair programming.
Cline’s own guide lists Aider as free and open source under Apache-2.0.
The guide describes Aider as a terminal-based programming assistant with Git-smart diffs and commits.
A Cline user keeps the same pay-for-the-model cost structure and moves the work to the command line.

Pick Windsurf instead of Cline if you want a full AI editor at a lower listed price than Cursor, and a smaller answer count does not concern you.
Measured: named 21 of 50 (Windsurf 42%), first 0 of 50 (Windsurf 0%), average position 5.
Windsurf has breadth without depth. All ten models name it at least once, but only Gemini 3.5 Flash reaches 4 of 5. When it does appear, it lands a little earlier than Cline, at an average position of 5 against 5.6. The OpenAI family names it in Windsurf 33.3% of its 15 answers. Claude Fable 5’s one-line job for it is budget-conscious AI-native editing.

Pick Devin instead of Cline if you want to hand complete tasks to an autonomous agent, the job the models give it.
Measured: named 17 of 50 (Devin 34%), first 0 of 50 (Devin 0%), average position 5.12.
Devin’s count leans on two models. Claude names it in all 5 answers and Gemini in 4. Claude Opus 5, from the same family as Claude, never names it. Seven of the ten models mention it at least once.
The models give Devin a different job from Cline’s. Claude Fable 5 called it best for teams that “need to offload complete tasks to an autonomous agent that sees work through from start to finish”.
Gartner Peer Insights lists Devin Desktop, by Cognition, among the alternatives Cline users also considered.
A Cline user who switches gains a delegation model and gives up reach across the panel. Devin has the lowest count of the six alternatives.

Cline’s row runs the full range. ChatGPT names it in none of its answers. Claude Opus 5, Claude Fable 5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash name it in all of theirs. A buyer’s sense of where Cline stands depends on which assistant they ask.
Devin shows the same split inside one family. Claude names it in 5 of 5 answers. Claude Opus 5 never does.
The leaders split too. Cursor is the leading name for nine models, and GPT-5.6 Sol leads with Claude Code. Across the OpenAI family, GitHub Copilot is named more often than either.
How the sample was built
10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers. The run took place on 2 September 2026 for the 2026-09 edition. Each model answered each question once. The five questions, verbatim:
- “What is the best AI coding agent or assistant for a software engineer? Name specific products.”
- “Which AI coding agent or assistant would you recommend to a software engineer in 2026?”
- “Compare the top AI coding agent or assistant options right now.”
- “I’m a software engineer and I need an AI coding agent or assistant. What should I use and why?”
- “Best AI coding agent or assistant for shipping a production codebase?”
The models come from four families. OpenAI supplies 15 answers from GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 Luna. Anthropic supplies 15 from Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5. Google supplies 10 from Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash. Perplexity supplies 10 from Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro.
Answer share is the share of the 50 answers that name a product. Named first means the product appeared before any other tracked product in that answer. The panel tracks 16 coding agents, and the models named 12 of them. Amp, Kiro, Zed and Factory were never named. The method sets out how names are matched and counted.
How this sits against the Cline alternatives guides

Kiro is on the panel’s tracked list, and none of the 50 answers named it. Amazon Q Developer is not tracked, so the panel holds no count for it.
A February 2025 Hacker News thread ranks nothing, but it puts Cline’s niche plainly.
One commenter wrote that “Cline is a great alternative to Cursor if you are not willing to switch over to another (forked) editor.”
None of those pages shows which AI assistant names which product. The per-model split and the named-first counts are the material a buyer cannot get from them.
What these counts cannot tell you
The counts measure presence in recorded answers. They do not measure quality, fit with your stack, support or price fairness. An answer can name a product only to warn against it. Each model answered each question once, so a single answer moves a vendor’s count by one. The run is one snapshot from 2 September 2026. Names are matched as strings, so the counts inherit any naming error in the answer text. The answers come from model APIs in English and can differ from consumer chat apps.

What are the key differences between Kilo Code, Roo Code, and Cline?
All three share one codebase origin.
Roo Code forked Cline to add custom modes and team features, per morphllm.
Kilo Code forked both and added orchestrator mode, inline autocomplete and a Memory Bank, per the same page.
Neither Roo Code nor Kilo Code is on the panel’s tracked list, so the panel holds counts for Cline alone.
