Best Claude Code Alternatives (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Recommend

Claude Code is named in 49 of 50 AI answers. See the alternatives 10 AI models name beside it, in measured order: Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Cline, Aider, Windsurf, Devin.

Claude Code is named in 49 of 50 recorded AI answers (Claude Code 98%) and named first in 19 (Claude Code 38%). That places it second of the 12 AI coding agents the panel named. It ties Cursor on presence and trails it on first mentions. The alternatives the models name most are Cursor (49 of 50, first in 24), GitHub Copilot (49 of 50, first in 2), Cline (30 of 50), Aider (26 of 50), Windsurf (21 of 50) and Devin (17 of 50). Every figure here counts names in AI answers.

TL;DR

Where does Claude Code sit in AI answers?

Claude Code sits second in the AI coding agents category, level with Cursor and GitHub Copilot on presence and behind Cursor on first mentions.

Measured: named 49 of 50 (Claude Code 98%), first 19 of 50 (Claude Code 38%), average position 1.88.

All ten models name it. Nine do so in 5 of 5 answers, and GPT-5.6 Terra in 4 of 5. GPT-5.6 Sol is the one model that leads with Claude Code. The other nine lead with Cursor, although most of them also name Claude Code in every answer. Claude Code’s gap between being named and being named first is 60 points. Cursor’s is 50.

The models name Claude Code for terminal work. GPT-5.6 Sol calls it the “best terminal-first autonomous coding agent”. One of its answers ties Claude Code to difficult debugging, unfamiliar repositories and refactors.

Several answers treat the alternatives as companions rather than replacements. Sonar Reasoning Pro suggests an IDE assistant such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot, complemented by Claude Code for terminal work. Gemini 3.5 Flash describes a common production stack with Cursor as the editor and Claude Code open in the terminal. So for some buyers the real question isn’t which tool to switch to. It’s which tool to add.

The full record is on the Claude Code vendor page, and the whole category is on the AI coding agents index.

1. Cursor

Pick Cursor if you want the agent inside an AI-native editor, and want the name the models lead with most often.

Measured: named 49 of 50 (Cursor 98%), first 24 of 50 (Cursor 48%), average position 1.8.

Cursor leads this category on first mentions, and it’s the only alternative ahead of Claude Code on that count. The recorded answers place it in the editor. Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash both describe it as a fork of VS Code, and GPT-5.6 Terra calls it the best all-around AI-native IDE agent for most individual developers. That gives Cursor a different working surface from Claude Code’s terminal, and several answers suggest running the two side by side rather than choosing between them. Switching makes most sense when the editor is where your working day happens. The full record is on the Cursor vendor page.

Pros

Cons

Pricing: Grow With AI lists a free tier and Pro at $20/month. Best for: engineers who spend the day in an editor and want repo-wide agent work there.

2. GitHub Copilot

Pick GitHub Copilot if your issues, pull requests and reviews already run through GitHub. The models name it as often as Claude Code and tie it to GitHub-centred teams.

Measured: named 49 of 50 (GitHub Copilot 98%), first 2 of 50 (GitHub Copilot 4%), average position 3.76.

Copilot has the widest gap in the table between presence and first place. The models list it almost every time and lead with it almost never. GPT-5.6 Terra puts the case in one line: “For teams already centered on GitHub, GitHub Copilot is the safest default.” The OpenAI models lean hardest, and GitHub Copilot leads their family across its 15 answers. GPT-5.6 Sol ties it to central administration, policy controls and teams whose developers use different IDEs. For a Claude Code user, then, the reason to switch is organisational rather than personal. The full record is on the GitHub Copilot vendor page.

Pros

Cons

Pricing: Slashdot lists GitHub Copilot at $10 per month. Best for: GitHub-centred teams working across several IDEs.

3. Cline

Pick Cline if you want an agent inside standard VS Code that runs on the model and API key you choose.

Measured: named 30 of 50 (Cline 60%), first 0 of 50, average position 5.6.

Cline is the most-named vendor in the category that never opens an answer. Its mentions cluster by model. Claude Opus 5, Claude Fable 5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash name it in every answer, while GPT-5.6 Terra never does. Gemini 3.5 Flash calls it “An incredibly popular, highly autonomous VS Code extension.” The same model files it with Aider under open-source agents that use your own API keys, and GPT-5.6 Sol groups it with Roo Code as the open, bring-your-own-model option. Google’s AI Overview for this search describes Cline the same way: a VS Code extension with dual Plan/Act modes and model flexibility. In the models’ terms, the reason to switch is control over the model and the provider. The full record is on the Cline vendor page.

Pros

Cons

Pricing: no vendor price was captured. The recorded answers describe it as open-source and running on your own API keys. Best for: VS Code users who want to pick the model behind the agent.

4. Aider

Pick Aider if you want to stay in the terminal, as with Claude Code, on an open-source tool that commits its own changes to git.

Measured: named 26 of 50 (Aider 52%), first 0 of 50, average position 6.

Aider is the alternative closest to Claude Code’s own working surface, because both are named for terminal work. Gemini 3.5 Flash calls Aider “A legendary, git-heavy terminal pair-programmer” and adds that it works with any LLM API key. Two captured search features agree on the basics. An apidog.com snippet calls Aider the most mature open-source Claude Code alternative, running in the terminal and changing files directly. Google’s AI Overview calls it a free, open-source command-line tool that supports local LLM backends via Ollama. The panel splits on it, though. Claude Opus 5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash name it in every answer, GPT-5.6 Terra leaves it out and GPT-5.6 Luna names it once. The full record is on the Aider vendor page.

Pros

Cons

Pricing: Google’s AI Overview for this search calls it free and open-source. No vendor price page was captured. Best for: terminal users who want an open-source, git-native pair programmer.

5. Windsurf

Pick Windsurf if you want an agent-first editor and Cursor is the wrong fit. The models name it mainly as Cursor’s counterpart.

Measured: named 21 of 50 (Windsurf 42%), first 0 of 50, average position 5.

Windsurf’s mentions are thin and wide. Every one of the ten models names it at least once, and none names it in all 5 answers. The recorded answers set it against Cursor more than against Claude Code. GPT-5.6 Sol calls it a “strong Cursor alternative for agent-centric IDE workflows”. Gemini 3.5 Flash describes it as a direct Cursor competitor from Codeium, built around an agentic system called Cascade. A captured search result from blink.new makes the same comparison in its snippet, saying Windsurf comes closest among Cursor alternatives. For a Claude Code user, Windsurf means a move into an editor. The full record is on the Windsurf vendor page.

Pros

Cons

Pricing: no public pricing is recorded. Best for: developers who want an agent-first editor other than Cursor.

6. Devin

Pick Devin if the job is handing complete, well-defined tasks to an autonomous agent that sees them through from start to finish.

Measured: named 17 of 50 (Devin 34%), first 0 of 50, average position 5.12.

Devin’s count comes from a handful of models. Claude Sonnet 5 names it in all 5 answers and Gemini 3.6 Flash in 4, while GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Opus 5 never name it. Claude Sonnet 5 recommends Devin for teams that want to fully offload well-defined backlog tasks. That’s a different job from the one the models give Claude Code. A buyer weighing the two is really choosing how much of a task to hand over, and whether to review the work as it happens or at the end. One naming caution: the panel counts any answer containing “Devin”, so mentions of the Devin Desktop product fall inside the count too.

Pros

Cons

Pricing: Slashdot lists Devin Desktop as Free. Best for: teams delegating complete, well-defined tasks.

How the alternatives compare

Cursor leads on first mentions. Cursor, Claude Code and GitHub Copilot share the top presence count of 49 of 50. Codex sits fourth in the category and has no entry on this page, so its measured row is included for reference. From Cline down, no vendor is ever named first.

Vendor Named Answer share Named first First share Avg position
Cursor 49/50 Cursor 98% 24/50 Cursor 48% 1.8
Claude Code (reference) 49/50 Claude Code 98% 19/50 Claude Code 38% 1.88
GitHub Copilot 49/50 GitHub Copilot 98% 2/50 GitHub Copilot 4% 3.76
Codex 39/50 Codex 78% 5/50 Codex 10% 2.85
Cline 30/50 Cline 60% 0/50 Cline 0% 5.6
Aider 26/50 Aider 52% 0/50 Aider 0% 6
Windsurf 21/50 Windsurf 42% 0/50 Windsurf 0% 5
Devin 17/50 Devin 34% 0/50 Devin 0% 5.12

Answer share is the share of the 50 answers that named the product. First share is the share where it appeared before any other tracked product. Prices from the captured pages sit in each entry, next to the page that states them.

Where the models disagree

The models agree on the top three names and split on everything below them.

Vendor GPT-5.6 Sol GPT-5.6 Terra GPT-5.6 Luna Claude Opus 5 Claude Sonnet 5 Claude Fable 5 Gemini 3.6 Flash Gemini 3.5 Flash Sonar Pro Sonar Reasoning Pro

Devin 0/5 0/5 1/5 0/5 5/5 1/5 4/5 2/5 2/5 2/5

GPT-5.6 Sol is the only model whose leader is Claude Code. The other nine lead with Cursor.

At family level the split moves again. The OpenAI family leads with GitHub Copilot, while the Anthropic, Google and Perplexity families lead with Cursor. No single model speaks for the panel.

GPT-5.6 Terra names the fewest of the seven products in this table. It never names Cline, Aider or Devin, and it names Claude Code in 4 of 5 answers.

Devin splits one family. Claude Sonnet 5 names it in all 5 answers, and Claude Opus 5 names it in none.

Claude Opus 5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash carry the open-source picks. Both name Cline and Aider in every answer.

Claude Opus 5 also tells the reader, in its own answers, that Anthropic makes both it and Claude Code, and asks the reader to weigh its view of Claude Code accordingly.

How the sample was built

The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers. The panel recorded one answer per model and question on 2 September 2026, for the 2026-09 edition. The five questions, verbatim:

  1. What is the best AI coding agent or assistant for a software engineer? Name specific products.
  2. Which AI coding agent or assistant would you recommend to a software engineer in 2026?
  3. Compare the top AI coding agent or assistant options right now.
  4. I’m a software engineer and I need an AI coding agent or assistant. What should I use and why?
  5. Best AI coding agent or assistant for shipping a production codebase?

The models come from four families. OpenAI supplies GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra (labelled ChatGPT in the data) and GPT-5.6 Luna, for 15 answers. Anthropic supplies Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 (labelled Claude) and Claude Fable 5, for 15 answers. Google supplies Gemini 3.6 Flash (labelled Gemini) and Gemini 3.5 Flash, for 10 answers. Perplexity supplies Sonar Pro (labelled Perplexity) and Sonar Reasoning Pro, for 10 answers.

The panel tracked 16 vendors and 12 were named. Amp, Kiro, Zed and Factory were never named. A vendor counts as named when an answer contains one of its recorded names, so “Copilot” counts for GitHub Copilot and “Gemini Code Assist” counts for Gemini CLI. The method page sets out the full procedure.

How this sits against the Claude Code alternatives guides

The pages that rank for “Claude Code alternatives” in Australia mix list posts, a software directory, forum threads and a vendor page. Each ranks or recommends products for purchase. None counts what AI models say.

Grow With AI’s “7 Powerful Claude Alternatives for 2026” is about Claude the assistant rather than Claude Code.

Its list runs ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Jasper, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek and Cursor.

The author frames the seven as tools “I personally recommend for 2026”.

The post is dated 30 November 2025.

Slashdot’s “Alternatives to Claude Code” is a software directory that says it lists “the best Claude Code alternatives on the market”.

Its list starts with JetBrains Junie.

Its site menu carries a “Software Advertising Options” link.

It also lists Amp.

No model in this panel named Amp.

Cursor appears on the directory only through its Composer 2.5 listing.

The directory carries no listing for Cline, Aider or Windsurf.

The dev.to result is a single reader comment and its replies, not the list post it responds to.

The comments are personal experience reports from developers.

Google shows that result under the title “10 Claude Code Alternatives That Every Developer Must Use”. Other results include a Reddit thread in r/ClaudeCode and a TechRepublic post on LinkedIn titled “5 Best Claude Code Alternatives for 2026”, whose snippet names Codex and Copilot. An apidog.com post covers open-source alternatives, and a blink.new post covers Cursor alternatives. More AI’s own comparison page also ranks, as a vendor writing about its own product.

Google’s AI Overview on the same results page puts OpenAI Codex first as the paid terminal-first alternative, and names Cline, Aider and OpenCode for open-source model flexibility. That’s one engine’s summary of the guides. It isn’t a count.

This page adds what those pages leave out: how often ten AI models name each alternative, how often each comes first, and where the models disagree.

What these counts cannot tell you

The counts measure presence in answers. They don’t measure code quality, reliability, support or price fairness. An answer can name a product only to warn against it, so being named differs from being recommended. Each model answered each question once, so one run can move a count. The snapshot is dated 2 September 2026 and the field changes monthly. Names are matched as strings, so a product mentioned under an unrecorded name is missed. API answers can differ from what the same model says in a consumer chat app, and every prompt was in English.

Frequently asked questions

Is there anything better than Claude Code for coding?

The panel counts names, so it can’t rank coding quality. On the counts, Cursor is the one alternative the models put first more often than Claude Code, in 24 of 50 answers against 19. Both appear in 49 of 50. Many answers suggest using the two together, with Cursor in the editor and Claude Code in the terminal.

Is Claude Code still the best for coding?

No measurement here can settle “best”. Claude Code is named in 49 of 50 answers, by all ten models, and first in 19. That puts it second in the category behind Cursor on first mentions. GPT-5.6 Sol is the one model that leads with it.

Is there a local alternative to Claude Code?

The recorded answers point to Cline and Aider. Gemini 3.5 Flash lists both for developers who want to use their own API keys or run models locally. In its answers, Aider works inside your local git repository and Cline runs inside VS Code. Google’s AI Overview for this search adds that Aider supports local LLM backends via Ollama. More AI’s own comparison page, a vendor result on the same search, describes a free desktop app that runs on your computer. The panel doesn’t track More AI.

What is the lowest-priced alternative to Claude Code?

The panel doesn’t measure price, and the captured pages give only a few list prices.

Slashdot lists Devin Desktop as Free.

Slashdot lists GitHub Copilot at $10 per month.

Grow With AI lists a free tier for Cursor, with Pro at $20/month.

No vendor price was captured for Cline or Aider. The recorded answers describe both as open-source tools that run on your own API keys, so the running cost depends on the model provider you connect.

Do Anthropic’s own models favour Claude Code?

The three Anthropic models name Claude Code in all 15 of their answers (Claude Code 100%). They also name Cursor and GitHub Copilot in all 15, and the family’s leader is Cursor. Claude Opus 5 discloses in its answers that Anthropic makes Claude Code.

Which alternatives do AI models name first?

Only four vendors ever open an answer: Cursor (24 of 50), Claude Code (19), Codex (5) and GitHub Copilot (2). Cline, Aider, Windsurf and Devin are never named first.
