What FAISS is
FAISS is a library for similarity search and clustering of dense vectors. It is intended for people building systems that need to find vectors close to a given vector or group vectors by similarity.
FAISS builds an index from a set of vectors, usually in RAM, then searches that index for the nearest neighbours to a new vector. It can process several query vectors at once. Some algorithms have GPU implementations, and an index can also be stored on disk instead of kept in RAM.
