What AWS RDS is
AWS RDS is an AWS web service for setting up, operating and scaling relational databases in the AWS Cloud. It is for teams that need managed capacity for databases using IBM Db2, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle Database or PostgreSQL.
It provides resizable database capacity and handles common administration tasks, including backups, software patching, failure detection and recovery. High availability can use a primary DB instance with a synchronous secondary instance, while read replicas support read scaling. Access can be controlled through AWS Identity and Access Management, and databases can run within a virtual private cloud.
