Key findings

  1. HubSpot is named in 50 of 50 recorded answers and named first in 32 of them.

  2. Pipedrive matches HubSpot on named answers and trails on first position: 8 of 50. The gap between the two measures is 84 points, the widest in the table.

  3. Attio (34 of 50), Salesforce (31), Close (29) and Zoho CRM (27) follow, and each of the four is named first in 4 or fewer answers.

  4. All ten models named HubSpot in all five of their answers. The splits sit below the leader: Notion was named in 5 of 5 Gemini 3.5 Flash answers and 0 of 5 from each of the three OpenAI models.

  5. YouTube is the most-cited host at 71 citations, ahead of attio.com on 39. The counts exclude ChatGPT, whose API returns no citations.

  6. The figures describe where names appear in one dated sample. They cannot rank product quality.

HubSpot. It is named in 50 of 50 recorded answers and named first in 32 of them. Pipedrive is named in all 50 as well and first in 8. Ten models answered the same five startup CRM questions in the 2026-09 edition of our CRM for startups research, one response for each prompt-and-model pair. HubSpot is the leader for every one of the ten models. Below first place, the answers split. These counts record where names appear in the answer text. Product quality is a separate question.

Which CRMs did the models name?

Thirteen of the fourteen tracked vendors were named at least once, so thirteen carry a row. Answer share counts the recorded answers that named the vendor. Named-first share counts the answers where its name arrives first among all the tracked vendors. Each row carries both counts, both shares and the average position.

Vendor Named Answer share Named first Named-first share Average position
HubSpot 50/50 100% 32/50 64% 1.5
Pipedrive 50/50 100% 8/50 16% 2.72

Zoho CRM 27/50 54% 4/50 8% 3.59
Notion 15/50 30% 1/50 2% 4.07
Folk 13/50 26% 0/50 0% 5.08
Freshsales 11/50 22% 1/50 2% 4.82
Airtable 8/50 16% 0/50 0% 5.13
Copper 5/50 10% 0/50 0% 5.4
Streak 5/50 10% 0/50 0% 6.6
Monday CRM 4/50 8% 0/50 0% 6.5

HubSpot leads both counts: named in 50 of 50 answers and first in 32. Pipedrive was named in every answer and first in 8. Attio was named in 34 of 50 and first in 2, and Salesforce was named in 31 and first in 1. Five vendors were named at least once and never first: Folk, Airtable, Copper, Streak and Monday CRM. Insightly is the one tracked vendor no model named, so it carries no row. Average position is the mean position the run records for each vendor among the tracked names.

Below the leader, named counts fall away quickly once you leave the top six, and named-first counts fall faster. HubSpot opens 32 of the 50 recorded answers. The next best is Pipedrive on 8, then Zoho CRM on 4. No other vendor opens more than 2.

How big is the gap between being named and being named first?

Widest in the middle of the table and narrowest at the bottom. A named count records any appearance of the vendor in an answer. A named-first count records the earliest tracked vendor name in that answer, counted across all fourteen tracked vendors. The gap between the two is measured in points.

Vendor Named share Named-first share Gap
Pipedrive 100% 16% 84 points
Attio 68% 4% 64 points
Salesforce 62% 2% 60 points
Close 58% 2% 56 points
Zoho CRM 54% 8% 46 points
HubSpot 100% 64% 36 points
Notion 30% 2% 28 points
Folk 26% 0% 26 points
Freshsales 22% 2% 20 points
Airtable 16% 0% 16 points
Copper 10% 0% 10 points
Streak 10% 0% 10 points
Monday CRM 8% 0% 8 points

Pipedrive (100% named, 16% first) carries the widest gap in the sample at 84 points. Next is Attio (68% named, 4% first) at 64, then Salesforce (62% named, 2% first) at 60 and Close (58% named, 2% first) at 56. HubSpot (100% named, 64% first) carries the smallest gap in the leading group at 36 points, because it opens an answer close to as often as it appears.

Below the leading group the gaps shrink with the shares. Folk (26% named, 0% first) holds 26 points with no first positions behind them. Airtable, Copper, Streak and Monday CRM sit lower still, and their gaps are the same shape: a small share meeting zero. A small gap at the bottom of the table is a different result from a small gap at the top. HubSpot was named first in 32 of the 50 recorded answers.

Do the models agree with each other?

On the leader, yes. All ten models named HubSpot in all five of their answers, and the run records HubSpot as the leader for every model. Below the leader the answers split, model by model. Each cell in the table counts the answers, of the five per model, that named the vendor.

Attio is the sharpest split near the top: named in 5 of 5 Gemini 3.5 Flash answers, and 2 of 5 from Claude and from Claude Fable 5. Salesforce is named in all five Claude Opus 5 answers and all five Claude answers, and in 2 of 5 from Claude Fable 5, Gemini 3.5 Flash and Perplexity. Notion is named in 5 of 5 Gemini 3.5 Flash answers and 4 of 5 Gemini answers, and in none of the five from GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT, GPT-5.6 Luna, Claude Fable 5 and Perplexity. Zoho CRM takes 4 of 5 from Claude and 4 of 5 from Claude Fable 5, against 1 of 5 from ChatGPT and 1 of 5 from Gemini 3.5 Flash.

The provider families agree on the leader and split below it. Attio (90% of Google answers, 46.7% of Anthropic answers) appears in more Google answers than Anthropic answers. Salesforce (80% of Anthropic answers, 60% of OpenAI answers, 50% of Perplexity answers) runs the other way. Close (70% of Perplexity answers, 66.7% of OpenAI answers, 60% of Google answers) is strongest with Perplexity. The four families contribute 15, 15, 10 and 10 answers, so each sampled model carries equal weight.

Which sources do the answers cite?

The most-cited hosts in the sample are youtube.com (71), attio.com (39), withallo.com (38), spotsaas.com (35), reddit.com (30), hubspot.com (25), lightfield.app (23) and saasmaste.com (20). Vendor-owned domains appear in the counts: attio.com (39), hubspot.com (25), close.com (11), salesforce.com (11) and folk.app (11). Two rules shape these counts. They exclude ChatGPT, whose API returns no citations, and Gemini citation redirects are resolved to real hosts before counting.

How was the sample built?

The 2026-09 edition records 10 models and 5 fixed prompts, 50 recorded answers in total, one response for each prompt-and-model pair. The ten models are GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 Luna (OpenAI, 15 answers); Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5 (Anthropic, 15 answers); Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash (Google, 10 answers); and Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro (Perplexity, 10 answers). The five recorded questions:

  1. What is the best CRM for an early-stage startup? Name specific products.
  2. Which CRM should a 5-person B2B SaaS sales team use?
  3. Compare the top CRMs for startups in 2026.
  4. I’m a founder doing my own sales. Which CRM do you recommend?
  5. Best affordable CRM for a startup that will scale to 50 reps?

A mention counts when a vendor’s name or a known alias appears in the answer text. Named first records the earliest tracked vendor name in an answer, counted across all 14 tracked vendors. Prompts stay fixed between editions, so the next edition measures the same five questions against the same models. The method page sets out how the counts are built, and the recorded answers hold every response.

How does this sit against the startup CRM guides?

The captured result set for this question sits on CRM companies’ own domains: a Reevo guide to AI-native CRMs, a Coffee guide to AI CRMs for US startups, Attio’s ranked list of CRMs for startups, a Salesforce article on AI CRM for startups, and HubSpot’s Smart CRM product page. Four of those five pages are among the comparable pages captured and read for this category, along with a Salesmate list of eleven AI CRMs.

Reevo’s captured guide ranks five AI-native CRMs and opens with Reevo itself, ahead of Clarify, Lightfield, Attio and Aurasell. It leaves HubSpot and Salesforce out of the list, on the argument that they carry AI features without an AI-native build.

Coffee’s captured guide is bylined to Coffee’s chief executive and co-founder. It ranks ten tools and opens with Coffee, then Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Attio, Close, Clarify, Day.ai, monday.com CRM and folk CRM. Its key-takeaways block says Coffee is the only tool in the guide that combines a built-in data warehouse, structured and unstructured data processing and dual deployment.

Attio’s captured guide opens its quick summary with Attio, then HubSpot, Pipedrive, Close, Folk and Salesforce, and it carries a starting price for each tool it ranks.

Salesforce’s captured article lists ten ways an AI CRM can help a startup. It credits two Salesforce marketers and closes on Agentforce, the company’s agent layer.

Salesmate’s captured list of eleven platforms leads with Salesmate CRM, then Salesforce Einstein AI, Lightfield, Creatio, Freshsales, Hubspot, monday CRM, C3 AI CRM, GoHighLevel, Attio CRM and Vtiger. Its FAQ puts Pipedrive, Freshsales and HubSpot Smart CRM forward for small businesses.

Four of the five comparable pages rank tools for purchase, and each of the four leads with the publisher’s own product: Reevo, Coffee, Attio and Salesmate. The fifth is Salesforce’s own feature article, written by the company’s marketers.

The guides answer a buying question: which tool to pick, for which team, at what price. The counts here answer a visibility question: which CRM names the answers produce, and how often each name arrives first. A founder who needs to know whether an AI answer names their product needs the counts. Comparing features and seat prices is the work the guides do well.

What can these counts not tell you?

They cannot compare product quality. A named count records that a vendor’s name appears in an answer. A named-first count records the earliest tracked vendor name in that answer, across all fourteen tracked vendors. Neither carries a verdict on the product behind the name. One response was collected for each prompt-and-model pair, so this is a descriptive snapshot of September 2026. Estimating repeatability, or isolating what the prompt wording does to an answer, would need repeated controlled trials. Alias matching is string-based, API models differ from consumer chat products, and the prompts are English and not localised. More editions sit in the research.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI CRM software for startups?

The run did not test AI features, so it carries no ranking of AI quality. What it measures is which CRM names the answers produce for startup questions. HubSpot (100% named, 64% first) and Pipedrive (100% named, 16% first) hold a place in every recorded answer, and Attio (68% named, 4% first) carries the next highest named count. A feature-level comparison of AI capabilities would need a different test.

What is the best CRM for startups?

This sample cannot answer that question. It counts which CRM names the answers produce, and product fit is a separate question. The measured result: HubSpot was named in 50 of 50 recorded answers and named first in 32. Pipedrive was named in 50 of 50 and first in 8. Attio was named in 34 of 50. A buying decision needs separate evidence about requirements, price and fit.

Did every model name the same leader?

Yes. HubSpot is the leader for all ten models, named in all five answers from each. The models part below it. Notion was named in 5 of 5 Gemini 3.5 Flash answers and in none of the five answers from GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT, GPT-5.6 Luna, Claude Fable 5 and Perplexity. Zoho CRM takes 4 of 5 from Claude and 4 of 5 from Claude Fable 5, against 1 of 5 from ChatGPT.

Which CRM did the models never name?

Insightly. It is the one vendor of the fourteen tracked with no mention across the 50 recorded answers, so it carries no row. The smallest named counts are Monday CRM on 4 of 50, then Copper and Streak on 5 of 50 each.

Why do the citation counts leave out ChatGPT?

ChatGPT’s API returns no citations, so its answers add nothing to the host counts. The counts come from the models that do return sources. Gemini citation redirects are resolved to real hosts before counting, so a host count points at the page an answer cited.

When is the next edition published?

The category is measured monthly and the prompts and models stay fixed between editions. The next count measures the same five questions against the same ten models. You can subscribe for it.

Behind the figures

Method and sources

Edition 2026-09: 5 fixed buyer prompts per category, sent to 10 models through their APIs. Each category contains 50 recorded answers. Answer share is the fraction of answers naming a vendor. Named first records the vendor's position before other tracked vendors, not the strength of a recommendation. This is one dated sample; small differences can reflect answer variation. API responses can differ from consumer chat products. Read the full method.
