Key findings
Tavily is named first in 16 of 50 answers, Firecrawl in 14 and Exa in four.
All three are named in more than 90% of answers, so presence separates them far less than position does.
Tavily led first position outright on three of the five recorded questions. Tavily and Firecrawl tied on the fourth with three first-position answers each. Bing led the remaining question.
Tavily leads first position in OpenAI answers at 7 of 15, while Firecrawl leads in Anthropic answers at 7 of 15.
First position records where a name appears in the text. Product quality, purchase suitability and recommendation strength are separate questions.
You are choosing a web search or scraping API for an agent, and you want to know which of these three names an AI answer reaches for first. Position matters, because the first product named is the one a reader carries away. Tavily is named first most often of the three, in 16 of 50 recorded answers, against 14 for Firecrawl and four for Exa, even though Exa is the most frequently named of the three overall. Exa appears in 47 of 50 answers and first in four . Tavily appears in 46 and first in 16 . Firecrawl appears in 46 and first in 14 . The mention order and the first-position order do not match. Our web search and scraping APIs research records both.
What does this Exa, Tavily and Firecrawl comparison measure?
It measures two things: whether a vendor is named in an answer, and which tracked vendor is named earliest. We help software founders and growth teams understand their products’ measured visibility in AI answers. The category tracks 17 products and all 17 were named. This article selects Exa, Tavily and Firecrawl for comparison.
A mention counts when the vendor’s name or a known alias appears in the answer text. Answer share measures whether a tracked vendor appears at all. Named first records the earliest appearance among all 17 tracked vendors, including products outside the selected three. So a first position can go to a vendor outside these three.
Which of Exa, Tavily and Firecrawl is named first most often?
Tavily, in 16 of 50 answers.
| Vendor | Named answers | Answer share | Named first answers | Named first share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exa | 47/50 | 94% | 4/50 | 8% |
| Tavily | 46/50 | 92% | 16/50 | 32% |
| Firecrawl | 46/50 | 92% | 14/50 | 28% |
Exa has the highest answer share of the three at 94% and the lowest first-position share at 8% . Tavily and Firecrawl sit two points behind on presence and sit 24 and 20 points ahead on position . Every raw answer behind these counts is linked from the Index.
How does the named-first order change across the five recorded questions?
It changes with the wording of the question. Tavily led first position outright on three of the five questions across the full category. Tavily and Firecrawl tied on the fourth question with three first-position answers each. Bing led the remaining question.
| Recorded question | Exa named first | Tavily named first | Firecrawl named first | All-category first-position leader |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. What is the best web search or scraping API for an AI agent? Name specific products. | 1/10 (10%) | 5/10 (50%) | 3/10 (30%) | Tavily |
| 2. Which web search or scraping API would you recommend to an AI agent in 2026? | 2/10 (20%) | 4/10 (40%) | 3/10 (30%) | Tavily |
| 3. Compare the top web search or scraping API options right now. | 0/10 (0%) | 0/10 (0%) | 2/10 (20%) | Bing |
| 4. I’m an AI agent and I need a web search or scraping API. What should I use and why? | 0/10 (0%) | 3/10 (30%) | 3/10 (30%) | Firecrawl, Tavily |
| 5. Best web search or scraping API for an AI agent to give an LLM live web access? | 1/10 (10%) | 4/10 (40%) | 3/10 (30%) | Tavily |
Question three is the outlier. Bing led first position across the whole category for the question asking to compare the top options . Firecrawl’s two first-position answers on that question lead only the three products selected for this article, and Tavily and Exa take none . Prompts stay fixed between editions, so the same five questions run again next time.
Does the named-first leader change by model provider?
Yes. Tavily leads in OpenAI answers and Firecrawl leads in Anthropic answers.
| Provider family | Recorded answers | Exa named first | Tavily named first | Firecrawl named first |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | 15 | 3/15 (20%) | 7/15 (46.7%) | 1/15 (6.7%) |
| Anthropic | 15 | 1/15 (6.7%) | 2/15 (13.3%) | 7/15 (46.7%) |
| 10 | 0/10 (0%) | 4/10 (40%) | 3/10 (30%) | |
| Perplexity | 10 | 0/10 (0%) | 3/10 (30%) | 3/10 (30%) |
The two largest provider families invert each other. Firecrawl takes one first position in 15 OpenAI answers and seven in 15 Anthropic answers . Google and Perplexity both put Tavily ahead of Firecrawl by one answer . Exa takes no first position in any Google or Perplexity answer .
What can you conclude from these named-first counts, and what can’t you?
You can conclude which name AI answers reach for first in this sample. You cannot conclude which product is better. First position records where a product name appears in the text. Product quality, purchase suitability and recommendation strength are separate questions.
You are assessing software visibility in AI answers and need to understand what the counts measure. Your decision here is how to read an AI-visibility comparison. A product-purchase decision needs separate evidence about your requirements and the products themselves.
The selected three do not fill the field. First-position counts for them sum to 34 of 50 answers. Other tracked products occupy 15 first positions. One recorded answer contains no matched tracked vendor, so it has no named-first vendor.
How was the September 2026 sample collected and what are its limits?
It is one dated snapshot: 50 recorded answers from ten models across five fixed English-language buyer questions. We report the dated sample and the exact questions so you can judge whether a visibility comparison supports your conclusion. The full method is published.
One response was collected per question-model combination. The results are a descriptive snapshot. Repeated controlled trials would be needed to estimate repeatability or isolate wording effects. Each sampled model is weighted equally. OpenAI and Anthropic contribute 15 answers each. Google and Perplexity contribute ten each.
The limits are fixed. Alias matching is string-based. API models differ from consumer chat products. Prompts are English and not localised. ChatGPT via API returns few citations, so source counts under-represent it. The wider picture sits in AI infrastructure according to AI, and you can subscribe for the next edition.

Behind the figures
Method and sources
Edition 2026-09: 5 fixed buyer prompts per category, sent to 10 models through their APIs. Each category contains 50 recorded answers. Answer share is the fraction of answers naming a vendor. Named first records the vendor's position before other tracked vendors, not the strength of a recommendation. This is one dated sample; small differences can reflect answer variation. API responses can differ from consumer chat products. Read the full method.
