Veo vs Runway (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say

Veo was named in 50 of 50 recorded AI answers and Runway in 46. See how ten models split between the two, and when each one fits.

Veo is named more often. It appeared in all 50 recorded AI answers and came first in 28 of them. Runway appeared in 46 of 50 and came first in 14. On presence the two sit close together. On first place the gap is wide. These counts come from ten AI models in the 2026-09 edition and record which product the answers name. Product quality sits outside them.

TL;DR

How often do AI models recommend Veo and Runway?

Veo leads Runway on every measured line. It ranks first of the 16 products the panel named for AI video generation, and Runway ranks second. Veo is the category leader, so the table carries both products and needs no reference row.

Product Named Answer share Named first First share Average position Category rank
Veo 50/50 Veo 100% 28/50 Veo 56% 1.66 1 of 16
Runway 46/50 Runway 92% 14/50 Runway 28% 2.46 2 of 16

The presence gap is small. First place is where the two separate. Veo’s named-versus-first gap is 44 points. Runway’s is 64 points, behind only Kling and Sora in the category. The models include Runway almost everywhere and usually put another product ahead of it. Veo’s average position of 1.66 against Runway’s 2.46 reads the same way.

The full category table, with every answer and cited source, is on the AI video generation record.

Which models prefer Veo, and which prefer Runway?

Every model named Veo in all five of its answers. Runway’s count moves by model. Six models named it in all five answers, and four named it in four. The split below counts presence in each model’s five answers.

Model Veo Runway
GPT-5.6 Sol 5/5 4/5
ChatGPT 5/5 5/5
GPT-5.6 Luna 5/5 5/5
Claude Opus 5 5/5 4/5
Claude 5/5 4/5
Claude Fable 5 5/5 5/5
Gemini 5/5 5/5
Gemini 3.5 Flash 5/5 4/5
Perplexity 5/5 5/5
Sonar Reasoning Pro 5/5 5/5

The Perplexity family is Runway’s strongest ground. Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro named it in every answer, so the family’s share is Runway 100%. That ties Veo there.

The Anthropic family is its weakest. Across Anthropic’s 15 answers the shares are Veo 100% and Runway 86.7%. Claude Opus 5 and Claude each dropped Runway once. Both of those models named Kling in all five answers. Gemini 3.5 Flash follows the same pattern, with Kling at 5 of 5 and Runway at 4 of 5.

GPT-5.6 Sol is the one OpenAI model that missed Runway. It named Sora in all five answers. Across OpenAI’s 15 answers the share is Runway 93.3%. Google’s ten answers give Runway 90%.

The disagreement is narrow. No model leans away from Veo. Where a model leaves Runway out, it names Kling or Sora in every answer.

The split counts presence only. The edition’s figures do not break named-first counts down by model, so they cannot show which model put Runway ahead of Veo.

What do the answers say about each?

The recorded answers credit Veo for realism and audio, and Runway for workflow and control. One Gemini answer attaches an access or cost caveat to each.

On Veo, Claude credited it with “The best current blend of realism, physical plausibility, and integrated audio”.

On Runway, ChatGPT wrote that “it is built around a creator workflow rather than just one-shot text-to-video generation”.

Gemini listed a weakness for each in one comparison answer. For Veo: “Access can still carry strict compute caps or tiered API walls depending on usage.” For Runway: “Subscriptions can get expensive quickly for heavy production, as advanced controls require higher-tier credits.”

Both Gemini caveats concern access and cost. Neither names a flaw in the video itself.

How do Veo and Runway differ?

Veo and Runway differ on how you pay and who they are built for. The panel’s recorded data holds no pricing for either product, so the detail below comes from the captured guides.

Pricing model

Chase Jarvis describes Veo as a consumption-based model charged per second of generated video. The veo3ai.io guide lists free Veo access through Google AI Studio with daily usage limits. Chase Jarvis describes Runway as a credit-based subscription with a flat monthly fee. The veo3ai.io guide lists Runway as paid only. Maginary lists a brief trial for Runway.

Who each is for

Chase Jarvis places Veo with corporate users and developers who generate clips at volume through an API. The veo3ai.io guide adds content creators who need audio-ready clips. Chase Jarvis places Runway with hands-on creative directors, filmmakers and VFX artists. The veo3ai.io guide adds professional editors who need long clips and editing integrations.

What each is named for

Maginary states that Veo generates synchronized audio natively. Chase Jarvis credits Veo with precise adherence to complex, multi-clause prompts. For Runway, Chase Jarvis calls the export of camera tracking data its most important feature for professional creatives. Maginary lists motion brush, inpainting and green screen removal among Runway’s editing tools.

When should you pick Veo?

Pick Veo when you want the product AI answers name by default, or when native audio and an API-first pipeline match your work.

When should you pick Runway?

Pick Runway when you edit and composite after generation, or when a fixed monthly budget suits a workflow with many attempts per shot.

How this sits against the Veo vs Runway guides

The ranking guides compare features, output and price, and they disagree with each other on basic specifications. MEMETIK counts which product ten AI models name, which none of these pages measures.

veo3ai.io

A feature-by-feature comparison with a verdict table and picks by use case. It calls video quality a close race. It reports Runway ahead of Veo on a quality benchmark. It recommends Seedance as a third option, with links to seedance.tv. The page ends by promoting the site’s own Veo-branded generation tools.

Chase Jarvis

A workflow and economics essay aimed at creative professionals. It frames Veo as enterprise infrastructure hosted on Vertex AI. It frames Runway as a tool for directorial control, built to feed VFX pipelines. Its pricing section carries the consumption-versus-subscription argument used above.

Maginary

A short table and verdict. It rates Veo higher on raw quality. It closes by pitching its own pay-per-use access to multiple video models.

AI Video School on YouTube

A side-by-side video that runs the same cinematic prompts through four generators, Veo and Runway among them. It gives no written verdict. The description discloses affiliate links. The creator notes that Veo has audio.

The guides contradict each other on clip length. veo3ai.io says Runway clips run double Veo’s length. Maginary lists Veo as the longer of the two. A buyer reading two guides can reach opposite answers. The panel counts give a fixed reference point that does not depend on either page’s tests.

How the sample was built

The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, one answer per model and question. The models come from four families. OpenAI supplied GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 Luna, for 15 answers. Anthropic supplied Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5, for 15 answers. Google supplied Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash, for 10 answers. Perplexity supplied Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro, for 10 answers.

Each model answered these five questions, verbatim:

  1. “What is the best AI video generation model or tool for a content creator? Name specific products.”
  2. “Which AI video generation model or tool would you recommend to a content creator in 2026?”
  3. “Compare the top AI video generation model or tool options right now.”
  4. “I’m a content creator and I need an AI video generation model or tool. What should I use and why?”
  5. “Best AI video generation model or tool for cinematic short-form video?”

Answer share is the share of the 50 answers that named the product. Named first is the count of answers where it appeared before any other tracked product. The panel tracked 17 products and 16 were named. The full method is on the method page.

What these counts cannot tell you

The counts record presence in AI answers. They say nothing about video quality, reliability, support or price fairness. An answer can name a product to warn against it, so being named differs from being recommended. Each model answered each question once, so a second run could differ. The edition is one dated snapshot. Products are matched by name strings. Answers came through model APIs, which can differ from consumer chat apps. The prompts are in English and framed for content creators.

Frequently asked questions

Is Runway the best AI video generator?

The panel does not rank video generators on quality. It counts names. Runway was named in 46 of 50 answers and came first in 14, which places it second of 16 in AI video generation. Veo ranks first on both counts.

Which is better, Veo or Flow?

Flow and Veo are used together. In ChatGPT’s recorded answer on cinematic short-form video, Veo is Google’s model and “Flow is its filmmaking-oriented interface for building cinematic clips and scenes”. The panel counts Veo by name and keeps no separate count for Flow.

Why do people use Veo?

The captured guides give two main reasons. veo3ai.io lists synchronized audio generation, including sounds, dialogue and ambient noise. Chase Jarvis points to precise adherence to complex prompts. In the panel, Veo is the one product every answer named.

Which is better, Kling AI or Runway?

The panel measures presence, and on presence Runway leads Kling. Runway was named in 46 of 50 answers and first in 14, with an average position of 2.46. Kling was named in 40 of 50 and first in 2, with an average position of 3. Kling does lead Runway inside some models. Claude Opus 5, Claude and Gemini 3.5 Flash named Kling in all five answers and Runway in four.

How often are these counts updated?

Editions run monthly. Each edition re-asks the same five questions and records a fresh set of 50 answers, so the Veo and Runway counts can move between editions.
