Opus Clip vs Descript (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say
Opus Clip is named in 48 of 50 AI answers and first in 36. Descript is named in 37 and first in 2. The model-by-model split, and when each one fits.
AI models name Opus Clip more often. Across 50 recorded answers, Opus Clip was named in 48 and named first in 36. Descript was named in 37 and named first in 2. The named counts are fairly close. The named-first counts are not: when a model leads with one of the two, it is almost always Opus Clip. Every one of the ten models names Opus Clip at least as often as Descript.
This page counts what AI answers name for a clipping question. It does not judge either product.
TL;DR
- Opus Clip is the default answer. It is named in 48 of 50 answers, first in 36 of 50, and leads the category.
- Descript is listed often and led with rarely. It is named in 37 of 50 answers and first in 2 of 50.
- No model names Descript more often than Opus Clip. GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Luna, Claude and Perplexity name both equally often. ChatGPT splits hardest, 5/5 against 2/5.
- The captured comparison pages give the two products different jobs: Opus Clip finds clips inside a long video, and Descript edits the recording itself.
- Choose by job. All five panel questions ask about turning long videos into short clips, which is the job the captured pages assign to Opus Clip.
How often do AI models recommend Opus Clip and Descript?
Opus Clip is named in 48 of 50 answers and Descript in 37. Opus Clip ranks first of the 14 products the panel recorded, and Descript ranks second. Because Opus Clip is itself the category leader, no separate reference row is needed.
| Vendor | Named | Share | Named first | First share | Avg position | Category rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opus Clip | 48/50 | 96% | 36/50 | 72% | 1.52 | 1 of 14 |
| Descript | 37/50 | 74% | 2/50 | 4% | 3.49 | 2 of 14 |
The gap that matters is in first place, not in presence. The models name Descript in most answers (Descript 74%) but lead with it in very few (Descript 4%). That 70-point gap between named share and first share is the widest of any product in the category. Opus Clip’s gap is 24 points.
In practice, the models treat Descript as a product to mention alongside the main pick. Its average position is 3.49, against 1.52 for Opus Clip. A buyer who reads only the first recommendation in an AI answer will usually see Opus Clip and will rarely see Descript. The full category record, with every answer, is on the short-form clipping index.
Which models prefer Opus Clip, and which prefer Descript?
No model names Descript more often than Opus Clip. Four models name them equally often, and six lean towards Opus Clip, most sharply ChatGPT.
| Model | Opus Clip | Descript |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| ChatGPT | 5/5 | 2/5 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Claude Opus 5 | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| Claude | 4/5 | 4/5 |
| Claude Fable 5 | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Gemini | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Perplexity | 4/5 | 4/5 |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | 5/5 | 3/5 |
The OpenAI models disagree with each other more than any other family. GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna name Descript in every answer. ChatGPT names it in two of five. Same family, same five questions, and a different view of whether Descript belongs in the answer at all.
Claude and Perplexity are the only models that leave Opus Clip out of an answer. Each names it in 4 of 5. Perplexity is also the one model whose most-named product is neither of these two. It names CapCut in all five of its answers.
Claude Fable 5, Gemini 3.5 Flash and Sonar Reasoning Pro show the next-widest split after ChatGPT: Opus Clip in every answer, Descript in three of five.
By family, the pattern holds everywhere. Opus Clip 100% in OpenAI answers against Descript 80%. Opus Clip 93.3% in Anthropic answers against Descript 73.3%. Opus Clip 100% in Google answers against Descript 70%. Opus Clip 90% in Perplexity answers against Descript 70%.
What do the answers say about each?
The answers describe Opus Clip as the clipping tool and Descript as the transcript editor. Four short extracts, copied from the recorded answers:
especially if you already record/edit your full podcast somewhere else and want to turn each episode into a batch of Shorts, Reels, and TikToks quickly
ChatGPT, on why Opus Clip is its default recommendation for a podcaster.
Descript is explicitly called out as the best transcript-first editor for podcasts, interviews, and talking-head videos
Perplexity, in an answer that recommends Descript for editing podcast and interview clips.
For most podcast teams, the best AI stack is Riverside for capture, Descript for editing, and Opus Clip for short-form repurposing
Claude Fable 5. The same sentence appears in answers from Claude.
creators and marketing teams are increasingly shifting toward alternatives due to credit-wasting “garbage cuts”, restrictive pricing, or the need for more specialized editing features
Gemini 3.5 Flash, on Opus Clip. A product can be named in an answer that also argues against it. The count records the name, not the verdict.
How do Opus Clip and Descript differ?
Opus Clip and Descript sit at different stages of the same job. Opus Clip finds the clips inside a long video. Descript edits existing recordings by editing the transcript. Both vendor records are at /vendors/opus-clip and /vendors/descript.
What each is named for. Opus Clip’s own comparison page describes it as combining video repurposing, editing software and social media calendar software. The same page lists autoposting and a scheduling calendar as features Descript lacks. Descript’s own comparison page says Descript covers pre-production, recording, long-form video editing and an AI assistant called Underlord. Its feature table marks Studio Sound, eye contact correction and a multi-track editor as included in Descript and not in OpusClip.
Pricing model. Both offer a free plan. Descript’s page says paid tiers above the free plan unlock more usage and premium AI features. An independent test page records Opus Clip’s free plan in processing minutes a month, with a watermark on free exports. The same page says Opus Clip’s paid plans remove the watermark. A page on Opus Clip’s domain says Descript meters transcription hours, AI speech minutes and AI credits. Opus Clip’s comparison page says it offers a free trial of its Pro plan. That page also says Descript offers no free trial of its paid plans. Its comparison table carries an update date well before this edition, so tier details may have moved. No current tier prices are recorded on this page, because the captured prices disagree by source and date.
Who each is for. The independent test page lists podcasters, YouTubers, coaches and creators who record long videos as Opus Clip’s users. It lists podcasters, course creators and creators who want one tool instead of three as Descript’s. The audiences overlap. The difference is where in the workflow each product sits. A page on Opus Clip’s domain says Descript fits people who primarily edit existing recordings such as podcasts, interviews and webinars. Opus Clip’s comparison page says Opus Clip fits anyone who puts social media growth first.
When should you pick Opus Clip?
Pick Opus Clip if your recording is already edited and the job is turning it into many short clips.
- It is named in 48 of 50 answers and first in 36 of 50. If you want the product AI answers lead with for this question, the count points here.
- Eight of the ten models name it in all five of their answers.
- The independent test page calls it a third kind of tool, one that finds the clips inside a long video.
- Posting is built in: its vendor lists autoposting and a scheduling calendar.
- One answer in the sample carries a warning. Gemini 3.5 Flash reports creators moving away from it over wasted credits and pricing.
When should you pick Descript?
Pick Descript if you also need to record, clean up and edit the full episode, and clips are one output among several.
- It is named in 37 of 50 answers, second in the category, and GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna name it in every answer.
- Its vendor’s feature table includes Studio Sound audio cleanup and a multi-track editor.
- Its editor works by editing the transcript. That is the capability Perplexity names it for.
- The trade-off is first place. Only 2 of 50 answers lead with Descript, so in an AI answer it usually sits below the main pick.
How this sits against the Opus Clip vs Descript guides
The ranking pages for Opus Clip vs Descript compare features, and three of the four captured are written by one of the two vendors. None of them counts what AI answers say.
Agent Opus vs Descript (opus.pro). Published on Opus Clip’s domain, it compares Descript with Agent Opus, a product that creates videos from a prompt, rather than with Opus Clip. It frames Descript as an editor of existing recordings and Agent Opus as a creator.
Descript vs. OpusClip (descript.com). Written by Descript, it heads one section “Descript is OpusClip plus everything else”. Its own FAQ answers whether Descript is better than OpusClip with “Hands down.”
Descript vs CapCut, plus Opus Clip (aihustleguy.com). The page is written by Jon Miksis. It runs the same footage through Descript, CapCut and Opus Clip and times each. It places Descript first for long-form editing and Opus Clip first for repurposing long videos. Its tool links include a CapCut affiliate-programme link and a “via” tracking parameter on its Opus Clip links. No disclosure statement appears in the captured text.
Descript Alternative (opus.pro). Published on Opus Clip’s domain, it argues Opus Clip produces more clips from a long video than Descript does. It concedes that Descript may suit buyers whose advanced editing needs come before social growth.
A Reddit thread on r/podcasting ranks above all four but could not be captured, so it is not described here.
What this page adds: the per-model split, the named-first counts and the extracts above. Those guides tell a buyer what each product does. This page tells a buyer which one AI answers put in front of them, and which models disagree.
How the sample was built
The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, one answer per model-and-question pair, in the September 2026 edition. The panel tracked 17 vendors in this category and 14 were named. The ten models are GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 Luna (OpenAI), Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5 (Anthropic), Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash (Google), and Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro (Perplexity).
The five questions, verbatim:
- What is the best AI tool to turn long videos into short clips for a podcaster? Name specific products.
- Which AI tool to turn long videos into short clips would you recommend to a podcaster in 2026?
- Compare the top AI tool to turn long videos into short clips options right now.
- I’m a podcaster and I need an AI tool to turn long videos into short clips. What should I use and why?
- Best AI tool to turn long videos into short clips for TikTok and Reels?
A product counts as named when its name appears in the answer. It counts as named first when it appears before any other tracked product. The answers also cite sources. The opus.pro domain is cited 27 times across the 50 answers. Descript’s own domain is not among the most-cited hosts for this category. How the panel runs is set out on the method page.
What these counts cannot tell you
These counts measure presence in AI answers. They say nothing about clip quality, editing quality, support, reliability or value.
- Being named is not being recommended. The Gemini 3.5 Flash extract above names Opus Clip while reporting complaints about it.
- Every question asks about turning long videos into short clips. Descript’s recording, editing and audio features are not what the questions ask about, so its count reflects its clipping visibility only.
- There is one answer per model-and-question pair, in one dated snapshot. A rerun can move individual answers.
- Names are matched as strings. Opus Clip’s aliases include the bare word “Opus”, which can also appear in other contexts.
- Answers come from model APIs, which can differ from what the consumer chat apps show.
- The questions are in English.
Frequently asked questions
Is there anything better than OpusClip?
In this sample, no product is named more often or placed first more often. Opus Clip is named in 48 of 50 answers and first in 36. The count does not measure which tool is better. Perplexity names CapCut in all five of its answers, and Choppity is named first in 5 of 50, the next-highest named-first count after Opus Clip.
Is there anything better than Descript?
Opus Clip is the only product named more often than Descript in this sample. First place is a different story: Descript is named first in 2 of 50 answers, behind Opus Clip, Choppity, Vizard and CapCut. Whether any of them is better is not measured. The questions ask about clipping, not full editing, which is the job the captured pages assign to Descript.
Is the OpusClip really worth it?
Worth is not measured, but the models name it more than any other clipping tool, in 48 of 50 answers. On cost, an independent test page records its free plan in processing minutes, with watermarked exports. Paid plans remove the watermark, according to the same page. Current prices should be checked with the vendor before buying.
Is Descript better than Audacity?
The panel cannot answer this. Audacity is not one of the 17 vendors tracked in this category, and none of the captured pages covers it.
Can you use Opus Clip and Descript together?
The independent test page describes doing exactly that: Descript to edit, Opus Clip to pull clips and CapCut to polish. Claude Fable 5 and Claude both repeat a line naming Descript for editing and Opus Clip for short-form repurposing in the same stack.
