Midjourney vs Ideogram (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say

Midjourney is named in 48 of 50 AI answers and first in 17. Ideogram is named in 35 and never first. Model-by-model split, pricing model and when each fits.

AI models name Midjourney more often. Midjourney was named in 48 of 50 recorded answers and named first in 17. Ideogram was named in 35 and named first in 0. All ten models named Midjourney at least as often as Ideogram, and two named them equally.

The counts cover which names AI answers produce for image-generator questions. They do not grade the images.

TL;DR

How often do AI models recommend Midjourney and Ideogram?

Midjourney is named in more answers and sits higher in them. Adobe Firefly leads the category and appears here as a reference row.

Product Named Answer share Named first First share Average position Category rank
Adobe Firefly (category leader) 48/50 Adobe Firefly 96% 18/50 Adobe Firefly 36% 2.71 First of 15
Midjourney 48/50 Midjourney 96% 17/50 Midjourney 34% 2 Second of 15
Ideogram 35/50 Ideogram 70% 0/50 Ideogram 0% 4.34 Third of 15

Answer share is the share of the 50 answers that named the product. Named first is the share of answers where it appeared before any other tracked product. Average position is where the product sits among the tracked names in the answers that mention it, so a lower number means earlier.

The gap between the two is mostly about position. Both products reach most answers. Midjourney sits second on average in the answers that name it, and it opens 17 of them. Ideogram sits between fourth and fifth on average and opens none. Its named-versus-first gap is 70 points, against 62 for Midjourney. A buyer who asks an assistant this question will usually see both names, with Midjourney higher up the list.

Adobe Firefly matches Midjourney on 48 named answers and leads on named-first count, 18 to 17. The two are the only products named in 48 of 50 answers.

Which models prefer Midjourney, and which prefer Ideogram?

No model names Ideogram more often than Midjourney. Eight models lean towards Midjourney and two name the pair equally.

Model Family Midjourney Ideogram
GPT-5.6 Sol OpenAI 5/5 3/5
GPT-5.6 Terra (ChatGPT) OpenAI 4/5 3/5
GPT-5.6 Luna OpenAI 5/5 3/5
Claude Opus 5 Anthropic 5/5 4/5
Claude Sonnet 5 Anthropic 4/5 4/5
Claude Fable 5 Anthropic 5/5 4/5
Gemini 3.6 Flash Google 5/5 2/5
Gemini 3.5 Flash Google 5/5 4/5
Sonar Pro Perplexity 5/5 5/5
Sonar Reasoning Pro Perplexity 5/5 3/5

Gemini 3.6 Flash shows the sharpest split. It named Midjourney in all five answers and Ideogram in two. Its answer to the designer question puts Midjourney first and never mentions Ideogram. Gemini 3.5 Flash, from the same family, named Ideogram in 4 of 5. Across the Google family, Ideogram (60% of Google answers) trails Midjourney (100% of Google answers), and most of that shortfall sits with one model.

The three OpenAI models agree with each other. All three named Ideogram in 3 of 5 answers. Across the family, Midjourney (93.3% of OpenAI answers) leads Ideogram (60% of OpenAI answers).

The Anthropic models are Ideogram’s strongest family. Ideogram (80% of Anthropic answers) sits close to Midjourney (93.3% of Anthropic answers). Claude Sonnet 5 named both in 4 of 5. Claude Opus 5 is the only model of the ten to name Midjourney more often than the category leader, Adobe Firefly.

Perplexity holds the one model that names Ideogram every time. Sonar Pro named both products in all five answers. Sonar Reasoning Pro, from the same family, named Ideogram in 3 of 5. Across the family, Ideogram (80% of Perplexity answers) trails Midjourney (100% of Perplexity answers).

The disagreements run inside families more than between them. The Google pair and the Perplexity pair each contain a model that names Ideogram readily and one that does not.

What do the answers say about each?

The answers give each product a separate job. Four short extracts from the recorded answers show it.

GPT-5.6 Terra (ChatGPT), asked to compare the top options: “Midjourney is the best default for visual inspiration; Ideogram is the most compelling specialist for text and graphic design.”

Sonar Pro (Perplexity), asked about product marketing images: “Ideogram is specifically recommended when text inside the image matters.”

Claude Opus 5, asked for a recommendation for a designer: “Buying Midjourney on reputation before you know whether your bottleneck is aesthetics, typography, or photo editing is the common expensive mistake.”

Gemini 3.6 Flash, listing a Midjourney drawback for designers: “hard to do precise layout edits or direct text placement.”

Being named is different from being endorsed. The Gemini 3.6 Flash answer names Midjourney first and still lists that drawback in the same entry.

How do Midjourney and Ideogram differ?

They differ on entry cost, on who the captured pages say each suits and on how the models describe them.

Pricing model

Midjourney remains subscription-based with no pay-per-image option. The pxz.ai comparison records no free Midjourney option. Ideogram has a free tier alongside its paid plans. The three captured pages agree on Midjourney’s Basic, Standard and Pro prices. They list different Ideogram prices and different free allowances. Check Ideogram’s own pricing page before comparing plan costs.

Private images

Ideogram offers private generation on a cheaper plan than the one Midjourney requires for Stealth Mode. GPT-5.6 Terra recorded the same distinction in its answer: “Midjourney’s private Stealth mode requires a Pro or Mega plan, while Ideogram includes private generation on Plus and above.”

Access and features

Midjourney still relies heavily on Discord, though a web interface is now available. Ideogram runs a web interface at ideogram.ai plus API access. Midjourney’s API access remains restricted. Midjourney offers video generation and Ideogram does not.

Who each is for

The crepal.ai comparison describes Midjourney as the tool “for artists and creatives who want breathtaking visuals”. It describes Ideogram as the tool for marketers, small business owners and social media managers who need graphics with text. AI Magicx lists Midjourney as best for editorial and art work, and Ideogram as best for design and social work.

What the models cite

The recorded answers cited docs.midjourney.com 12 times and ideogram.ai 6 times. Citation coverage varies by model, so the counts show which vendor documentation the answers reached for. They do not show how far each vendor was trusted.

Full records for each product sit at Midjourney and Ideogram.

When should you pick Midjourney?

Pick Midjourney if you want the product AI answers put at the top. It opens 17 of 50 answers, and Ideogram opens none.

The Claude Opus 5 answer is the counterweight: it names Midjourney and warns against buying it on reputation alone.

When should you pick Ideogram?

Pick Ideogram if text inside the image is the job. The answers quoted above name it for text and graphic design, and it appears in 35 of 50 answers from all ten models.

Expect it further down an answer’s list. No model placed Ideogram first in any of the 50 answers.

How this sits against the Midjourney vs Ideogram guides

The comparison pages that rank for this query test the two tools by hand and compare features and prices. The panel counts which product AI answers name, model by model.

The pxz.ai comparison rates both tools with stars across categories and publishes plan tables for each. It recommends Ideogram for text, budget, private generation and ease of use. It recommends Midjourney for artistic quality, fine art and video. The captured page opens with a promotional banner for a separate image generator, and no affiliate disclosure appears in the captured text.

The AI Magicx comparison adds FLUX as a third tool and scores all three by category. AI Magicx sells a multi-model platform, and the article promotes it as a way to reach FLUX and other models through one subscription. It names Ideogram the primary tool for social media managers and Midjourney the primary tool for editorial and publishing work.

The crepal.ai comparison is a first-person test of an older Ideogram release than the other two pages cover. Its author would probably choose Ideogram if limited to one tool. CrePal markets its own video creation agent on the same page.

None of the three pages reports what AI assistants say about either product. The per-model split above is the part they lack. A buyer who shortlists through Gemini 3.6 Flash sees a different pair than one who shortlists through Sonar Pro.

How the sample was built

The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, from the September 2026 edition. Every model ran with web search on. The five questions, verbatim:

  1. “What is the best AI image generation tool for a designer? Name specific products.”
  2. “Which AI image generation tool would you recommend to a designer in 2026?”
  3. “Compare the top AI image generation tool options right now.”
  4. “I’m a designer and I need an AI image generation tool. What should I use and why?”
  5. “Best AI image generation tool for product marketing images?”

The ten models come from four families. OpenAI: GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna. Anthropic: Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Fable 5. Google: Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash. Perplexity: Sonar Pro and Sonar Reasoning Pro. Each model answered each question once.

The panel tracked 16 image generators and 15 were named at least once. The full category record, with every answer and cited source, is at the AI image generation index. The counting rules are on the method page.

What these counts cannot tell you

The counts measure presence in AI answers. They say nothing about image quality, speed, support or value for money. Each model answered each question once, so a single different answer moves a per-model figure by one in five. The figures are one dated snapshot. Products are matched on their names in the answer text. The answers come from model APIs and can differ from what the consumer chat apps show. The questions are in English, and three of the five frame the buyer as a designer. A named product is not always a recommended one, because an answer can name a product to warn against it.

Frequently asked questions

Can an ideogram generate images?

Yes. Ideogram is an AI image generator, reached through a web interface at ideogram.ai and through an API. It was named in 35 of the 50 recorded answers to questions about AI image generation tools.

Is Ideogram 4.0 good for image quality?

The panel does not grade image quality, so it cannot say. It records that all ten models named Ideogram at least twice in their five answers. The captured comparison pages tested earlier Ideogram releases.

What are the key differences between Flux and Midjourney?

In the panel, Midjourney was named in 48 of 50 answers and Flux in 7, and Flux was never named first. On the product side, FLUX is open-weight and available across many platforms and APIs. Midjourney is a closed model with restricted API access.

Is Ideogram AI free to use?

Ideogram has a free tier with limited generations. The captured pages disagree on the size of the free allowance, so check Ideogram’s pricing page for the current limit. Midjourney has no free option.

Which AI model names Ideogram most often?

Sonar Pro. It named Ideogram in all five of its answers, the only model to do so. Gemini 3.6 Flash named it least often, in 2 of 5.

Do AI models name Midjourney more often than Adobe Firefly?

No. Both were named in 48 of 50 answers. Adobe Firefly was named first in 18 and Midjourney in 17, which puts Firefly first in the category.
