Google vs Anthropic (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say
Google is named in 50 of 50 AI answers, Anthropic in 46. Anthropic is named first in 14, Google in 2. Model-by-model counts for the LLM API choice.
The models name Google more often and Anthropic earlier. Google is named in 50 of 50 recorded answers and placed first in 2 of 50. Anthropic is named in 46 of 50 and placed first in 14 of 50. On presence the two are close. On first place they are not.
This page counts what ten AI models name when a developer asks which LLM API to build on. It does not judge either API.
TL;DR
- Google has the wider presence. All ten models named it in all five of their answers.
- Anthropic gets the earlier slot. It is named first in 14 answers to Google’s 2, and its average position is 1.98 to Google’s 2.88.
- One model splits them sharply. GPT-5.6 Sol names Google in 5 of 5 answers and Anthropic in 2 of 5.
- Neither vendor leads the category. OpenAI does.
- No pricing model is recorded for either vendor, so price has to come from the vendors themselves.
How often do AI models recommend Google and Anthropic?
Google is named in more answers, and Anthropic is named first in more. OpenAI, the category leader, is shown as a reference row.
| Vendor | Named | Answer share | Named first | First share | Average position | Category rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI (reference) | 50/50 | OpenAI 100% | 33/50 | OpenAI 66% | 1.52 | 1 |
| 50/50 | Google 100% | 2/50 | Google 4% | 2.88 | 2 | |
| Anthropic | 46/50 | Anthropic 92% | 14/50 | Anthropic 28% | 1.98 | 3 |
Answer share is the share of the 50 answers that named the vendor. Named first means the vendor appeared before any other tracked product in that answer.
The gap between those two measures tells the story. Google’s named share minus its named-first share is 96 points, the widest of the 15 vendors tracked in this category. Anthropic’s gap is 64 points. The models treat Google as a name that belongs on the list, usually after something else. Anthropic is left out of a few answers, but when it appears it tends to sit near the top. Google ranks second in the category and Anthropic third.
The full category table sits on the LLM API index.
Which models prefer Google, and which prefer Anthropic?
No model leaves Google out, so every lean in this comparison is a lean on Anthropic. The split below counts how many of each model’s five answers named each vendor.
| Model | Anthropic | |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | 5/5 | 2/5 |
| GPT-5.6 Terra (ChatGPT) | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Claude Opus 5 | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Claude Sonnet 5 (Claude) | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Claude Fable 5 | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Gemini 3.6 Flash (Gemini) | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Sonar Pro (Perplexity) | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | 5/5 | 5/5 |
Eight of the ten models name both vendors in every answer. The two that do not are both OpenAI models.
GPT-5.6 Sol is the sharpest disagreement. It names Google in every answer and Anthropic in two, which is Anthropic 40% for that model. GPT-5.6 Terra, the model behind the ChatGPT slot, drops Anthropic once, which is Anthropic 80%. Inside the same family, GPT-5.6 Luna names Anthropic in all five. Across the OpenAI family’s 15 answers, the models name Anthropic 73.3% of the time and Google 100%.
The other three families show no lean at all. The Anthropic family’s 15 answers name both vendors every time. So do the Google family’s 10 and the Perplexity family’s 10.
So the Claude models do not favour Anthropic over Google, and the Gemini models do not favour Google over Anthropic. Both families name both vendors in every answer. The only preference in the panel comes from a family that sells neither.
What do the answers say about each?
The answers frame Anthropic around coding, agents and safety, and Google around value and long context. Four short quotes show the pattern.
Gemini 3.5 Flash, a Google model, opened its breakdown with Anthropic:
“Best for Logic, Coding, & Agentic Workflows: Anthropic (Claude API)”
GPT-5.6 Sol, the model that names Anthropic least, placed Google on its shortlist this way:
“Best price/performance and very large-context alternative: Google Gemini”
Sonar Reasoning Pro put the two side by side in one line:
“Anthropic is the top choice when safety and reliability are critical; Gemini is the best value for long-context and multimodal use.”
Claude Opus 5 flagged its own interest before answering:
“I’m made by Anthropic, which sells one of the APIs you’d be choosing between (Claude).”
Bold formatting in the original answers has been removed. The words are unchanged.
How do Google and Anthropic differ?
They differ less on price, which neither record holds, than on what the answers name them for and who the comparison pages say they suit.
| Anthropic | ||
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Not recorded | Not recorded |
| What the quoted answers name it for | Price/performance, long context, multimodal use | Coding, agentic workflows, safety |
| Who MindStudio says it suits | Teams deeply embedded in Google Workspace | Teams that need reliable, predictable agents for sensitive workflows |
| Vendor-owned site cited by the answers | ai.google.dev, 21 citations | None among the most-cited vendor sites |
Pricing. No pricing model is recorded in either vendor record. None of the captured comparison pages states a price for either API. Where the quoted answers raise value, they raise it for Google.
Google. MindStudio’s comparison describes Google’s strategy as a bet on platform depth and data access. It says Gemini agents can search Google in real time and base their responses on current, cited information. It lists organisations building on Google Cloud infrastructure among the best fits. The recorded answers cited Google’s own developer site, ai.google.dev, 21 times, more than any other vendor-owned host. Google’s record is on the Google vendor page.
Anthropic. The same page describes Anthropic’s strategy as a bet on safety as infrastructure. It credits Anthropic with the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting agents to external tools and data. It lists developers building on open protocols among Anthropic’s best fits. No Anthropic-owned site appears among the five vendor-owned hosts the answers cited most. Anthropic’s record is on the Anthropic vendor page.
When should you pick Google?
Pick Google if you need the vendor every model puts on the list. It is named in 50 of 50 answers, by all ten models, in every family.
- Every model named it in all five of its answers, including the three Claude models.
- The quoted answers that discuss cost frame it on value. GPT-5.6 Sol calls it the price/performance alternative, and Sonar Reasoning Pro calls it the best value for long context.
- MindStudio lists teams deeply embedded in Google Workspace as a fit.
- MindStudio also names real-time information and large-scale document processing as Google use cases.
Know the limit before you rely on it. Google is placed first in only 2 of 50 answers. The models include it far more often than they lead with it.
When should you pick Anthropic?
Pick Anthropic if you care where a vendor lands in the answer, not just whether it appears. It is named first in 14 of 50 answers, and its average position of 1.98 is closer to the top than Google’s 2.88.
- Anthropic 100% in the Claude, Gemini and Perplexity families.
- Gemini 3.5 Flash, a Google model, headed its answer with Anthropic for coding and agentic work.
- MindStudio lists use cases where mistakes have real consequences as an Anthropic fit.
- MindStudio says Anthropic’s published guidance asks agents to request only the permissions they need.
The limit here is one model family. GPT-5.6 Sol names Anthropic in 2 of 5 answers, and the OpenAI family as a whole leaves it out of some answers.
How this sits against the Google vs Anthropic guides
The pages that rank for this query compare strategy, report a single build test or trade opinions. None of them counts what AI answers say.
MindStudio. The page compares Anthropic, OpenAI and Google on how each approaches AI agents. It is published by MindStudio, which sells a no-code platform for building AI agents. The page promotes that platform inside the comparison. Its verdict is that no single approach is clearly best. It does not count AI answers.
Kyra Labs on Medium. One builder gave Google, OpenAI and Anthropic the same prompt inside Lovable and compared the results. The author concluded that Anthropic offered the best overall experience. The author called Google ideal for MVPs with excellent visual design. The author also warned that Google introduced bugs across iterations. It is one person’s single test, reported as such.
Hacker News. The captured thread is a discussion under news of an Anthropic funding round, not a product comparison. Its opening comment asks how Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI can compete against Google’s spending. The replies are opinion.
Those pages tell you what their authors think of the products. This page tells you what ten AI models name when a developer asks, and in what order. Use both, for different questions.
How the sample was built
The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, from the 2026-09 edition. Each model answered each question once. The five questions, verbatim:
- “What is the best LLM API to build a product on for a developer? Name specific products.”
- “Which LLM API to build a product on would you recommend to a developer in 2026?”
- “Compare the top LLM API to build a product on options right now.”
- “I’m a developer and I need a LLM API to build a product on. What should I use and why?”
- “Best LLM API to build a product on for an AI startup balancing cost and quality?”
The ten models come from four families. OpenAI supplies GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna, for 15 answers. Anthropic supplies Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Fable 5, for 15. Google supplies Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash, for 10. Perplexity supplies Sonar Pro and Sonar Reasoning Pro, for 10. The full method is on the method page.
What these counts cannot tell you
These counts measure presence and order in recorded answers. They do not measure quality, uptime, support, price fairness or fit with your stack. Being named is not the same as being recommended, because an answer can name a vendor to warn against it. Each model answered each question once, so a single answer can move a count. The data is one dated snapshot. Answers came through the API, which can differ from consumer chat, and every prompt was in English.
Names are matched as strings. An answer counts for Google if it says “Google” or “Gemini”, and for Anthropic if it says “Anthropic” or “Claude”. A passing mention of Google Cloud or Google Search therefore counts as naming Google. That can lift Google’s presence count without any recommendation behind it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google own part of Anthropic?
The captured sources do not establish a stake size. Commenters on the captured Hacker News thread say Google has invested in Anthropic. That is a forum claim, not a filing. The panel measures what AI answers name and holds no ownership data, so check company filings for the figure.
Is Anthropic the same as Google?
No. The panel tracks them as separate vendors, with separate counts. MindStudio’s comparison also treats them as two companies making different bets on AI agents. Anthropic’s models are called Claude and Google’s are called Gemini.
Did Google acquire Anthropic?
None of the captured pages reports an acquisition. One Hacker News commenter predicts that Google will buy Anthropic if it comes to it. That is a prediction, not a report. The panel still tracks Anthropic as its own vendor in this edition.
Is Anthropic the best AI company?
The panel cannot answer that, because it does not measure quality. It measures presence. In this category Anthropic is named in 46 of 50 answers and first in 14 of 50, which places it third, behind OpenAI and Google.
Do Claude models favour Anthropic?
Not in this category. The three Claude models named Anthropic in all 15 of their answers, but they also named Google in all 15. Claude Opus 5 went further and disclosed that it is made by Anthropic before answering.
Can Google or Anthropic pay to appear on this page?
No. No position is sold, sponsored or influenced. Vendors cannot pay to appear, be reordered or be removed.
