ElevenLabs vs Murf (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say
ElevenLabs was named in 50 of 50 AI answers and first in 47. Murf was named in 37 and never first. The per-model split, billing models and when each fits.
AI models name ElevenLabs more often. ElevenLabs was named in 50 of 50 recorded answers and named first in 47 of 50. Murf was named in 37 of 50 and named first in 0 of 50. Murf usually makes the list. It never heads it. These are counts of what 10 AI models named across 50 answers in the September 2026 edition, not a verdict on which product sounds better.
TL;DR
- ElevenLabs is the default name. Every one of the 10 models named it in all 5 of its answers, and it opened 47 of the 50.
- Murf is the usual second name, not a rare one. All ten models named it at least twice, but none put it first.
- Murf’s support is uneven by model. Claude Fable 5 and Perplexity named it in 5 of 5 answers. ChatGPT named it in 2 of 5.
- The captured guides split on sound quality, so treat any quality verdict as one reviewer’s opinion. They describe the same billing difference: ElevenLabs meters text, Murf Studio meters generation time.
- Pick on workflow. The captured record ties ElevenLabs to cloning, multilingual output and API builds, and Murf to an editing timeline, training content and corporate voiceover.
How often do AI models recommend ElevenLabs and Murf?
ElevenLabs is named in every recorded answer. Murf is named in most of them (Murf 74%). The sharper difference is position. ElevenLabs sits at an average position of 1.08, so it almost always opens the answer. Murf averages 3.84, so it usually appears after other products have been named.
| Product | Named | Share | Named first | First share | Avg position | Category rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ElevenLabs | 50/50 | 100% | 47/50 | 94% | 1.08 | 1 |
| Murf | 37/50 | 74% | 0/50 | 0% | 3.84 | 2 |
ElevenLabs is the category leader, so no separate reference row is needed. Murf ranks second of the 17 tracked products on named count, just ahead of Descript at 36 of 50.
The named-versus-first gap is where the two products part ways. Murf’s gap is 74 points, the widest of any product in this category. ElevenLabs’ gap is 6 points, the narrowest. For a buyer, that means an AI answer will usually show both names, with ElevenLabs on top and Murf further down.
Answer share counts presence. It does not show whether an answer praised the product or set it aside. The full answer set sits on the category record.
Which models prefer ElevenLabs, and which prefer Murf?
No model names Murf more than ElevenLabs. Every model named ElevenLabs in all 5 of its answers, so the only thing that varies between models is how much room they make for Murf.
| Model | ElevenLabs | Murf |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| ChatGPT | 5/5 | 2/5 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Claude Opus 5 | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Claude | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| Claude Fable 5 | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Gemini | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| Perplexity | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | 5/5 | 4/5 |
Three disagreements stand out.
ChatGPT is the least likely to mention Murf. It named Murf in 2 of 5 answers (Murf 40%), the lowest of the ten. Its sibling GPT-5.6 Sol named Murf in 4 of 5. Two OpenAI models, asked the same five questions, treat the same product differently.
The Perplexity models are the most likely. Perplexity named Murf in every answer and Sonar Reasoning Pro in 4 of 5. Across the family that is Murf (90% of the 10 Perplexity answers), the highest of the four families. The OpenAI family is the lowest at Murf (60% of its 15 answers). Anthropic sits at Murf (80% of 15) and Google at Murf (70% of 10).
Anthropic’s models disagree with each other. Claude Fable 5 named Murf in 5 of 5. Claude Opus 5 named it in 3 of 5.
ElevenLabs shows no split of this kind. Its only variation is position, and even that is thin: Descript was named first in 2 of 50 answers and Play.ht in 1 of 50. Murf was never named first by any model.
The chance of Murf appearing in an AI answer depends on which assistant is asked. The chance of ElevenLabs appearing does not.
What do the answers say about each?
The recorded answers describe ElevenLabs as the reference point for realism and Murf as a production-workflow alternative.
Claude Opus 5, answering the realistic-voiceover question: “For pure realism in a voiceover, ElevenLabs is still the default recommendation and the benchmark everyone else gets compared to.”
Gemini, answering the same question: “ElevenLabs is widely considered the gold standard for voice realism.”
Perplexity, answering the comparison question: “The strongest all-around AI voice generator right now is ElevenLabs, while Murf, WellSaid, Speechify, and PlayHT/PlayAI are the main alternatives depending on whether you care most about studio workflow, enterprise use, reading text aloud, or API-driven voice automation.”
Sonar Reasoning Pro, answering the same question: “For full production studios and corporate voiceover, tools like Murf AI and WellSaid Labs remain top choices.”
The quotes follow the counts. ElevenLabs is placed first and described by how it sounds. Murf is placed later and described by the kind of work it suits.
How do ElevenLabs and Murf differ?
They bill differently, and the captured pages aim them at different buyers. ElevenLabs is tied to creators, developers, cloning and languages. Murf is tied to edited voiceovers for training, marketing and corporate work.
ElevenLabs
Pricing model. ElevenLabs uses a credit system. Its API is billed at character rates that vary by model, and its creative plans carry separate allowances. The Medium guide by Justin Levitt notes that characters are charged on regenerations too, so every redo of a paragraph costs characters again.
Who it is for. Murf’s own comparison page describes ElevenLabs as designed for creators, businesses and developers who want high-quality audio narration. The Levitt guide points ElevenLabs at YouTube voiceovers, audiobooks, multilingual content and voice cloning. The same guide calls the ElevenLabs API the more mature of the two, with streaming and SDKs for Python and JavaScript.
What the models name it for. Realism, in the Claude Opus 5 and Gemini answers quoted above.
Murf
Pricing model. Murf Studio plans include voice-generation time, while the Murf API charges by text characters. Murf’s own page lists a free plan, paid Creator and Business plans, and custom Enterprise pricing. The Levitt guide argues that Murf’s time-based model does not penalise redos the way character billing does.
Who it is for. Murf’s own page says it focuses on professional voiceovers. The same page lists e-learning, advertising, marketing, IVR and audiobooks as its top use cases. The Levitt guide points Murf at corporate training, explainer videos that need precise timing, and presentations with narration. That guide also describes a timeline editor with per-sentence pitch and speed controls and a built-in music library.
What the models name it for. Studio workflow and corporate voiceover, in the Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro answers quoted above.
The captured pages publish plan prices, but they do not agree with each other. The Levitt guide and Murf’s own page list different monthly prices for Murf’s Creator plan. This page states no prices for that reason. Check each vendor’s current pricing page before comparing cost.
When should you pick ElevenLabs?
Pick ElevenLabs when you want the product every model in the panel names, or when your work matches what the captured record ties to it.
- Every model named it in all 5 of its answers, and it opened 47 of the 50. A shortlist built from AI answers will include it.
- Choose it for cloning a specific voice or narrating in several languages. The Levitt guide lists both as reasons to choose ElevenLabs.
- Consider it for building voice into a product. The same guide describes a streaming API with Python and JavaScript SDKs.
- Short-form output may cost less on it. The Levitt guide says ElevenLabs’ lower tiers are cheaper for YouTube videos, social clips and ads.
When should you pick Murf?
Pick Murf when your work is edited voiceover for training, marketing or corporate video, or when you would rather pay for generation time than for characters.
- It was named in 37 of 50 answers and by all ten models. The models treat it as a standard alternative, not a fringe one.
- Claude Fable 5 and Perplexity named it in every answer. If those are the assistants your team asks, Murf will be in front of them.
- Its timeline editor lets you set pause length, pitch and speed per sentence and sync narration to video, according to the Levitt guide.
- Studio plans meter generation time rather than text characters.
- Murf’s own page lists e-learning, IVR and marketing among its top use cases.
Expect Murf further down an AI answer, not at the top.
How this sits against the ElevenLabs vs Murf guides
The captured guides compare features, sound and price, and two of them reach opposite verdicts on sound. This page counts which names AI answers produce, model by model, and makes no sound verdict.
Justin Levitt on Medium. It says ElevenLabs produces more natural-sounding voices and Murf gives more control over editing and timing. The captured text links to both products through redirect links and carries no disclosure statement.
The Speakr. It names Murf the better choice when voice quality and professional voiceovers are the priority. It recommends ElevenLabs when generation limits and the credit system matter more. Its reviewers report that the ElevenLabs free plan showed an “unusual activity” error and would not play the generated audio, so they could not fully assess ElevenLabs’ voice quality. It gives both products the same total score.
Murf. This comparison is published by Murf on murf.ai, so it is vendor-authored. It positions Murf as focused on professional voiceovers.
Cartesia. This comparison is published by Cartesia, a third voice vendor, and the page promotes Cartesia’s own product. It compares the two by model, cloning access and billing unit, and advises pricing the same text on the model you would actually deploy. Cartesia is itself one of the 17 products tracked in this category.
Cybernews on YouTube. The video compares ElevenLabs, Murf and Synthesia, and its description states the channel is affiliated with the providers and may earn a commission. The presenter says ElevenLabs is the one they like most and calls Murf great for dialogues and audiobooks.
None of these pages reports how often AI models name either product, or how that differs between assistants. That per-model split is what this page adds. The opposite sound verdicts from the Levitt guide and The Speakr are also a reason to test both products on your own script.
How the sample was built
The panel ran 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, one answer per model-and-question pair. The five questions, verbatim:
- “What is the best AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool for a podcaster? Name specific products.”
- “Which AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool would you recommend to a podcaster in 2026?”
- “Compare the top AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool options right now.”
- “I’m a podcaster and I need an AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool. What should I use and why?”
- “Best AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool for a realistic voiceover?”
The ten models are GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 Luna (OpenAI, 15 answers), Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5 (Anthropic, 15 answers), Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash (Google, 10 answers), and Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro (Perplexity, 10 answers). The method page sets out how answers are recorded and counted.
What these counts cannot tell you
The counts show which products the models named. They do not show which product sounds better, costs less or suits a particular team. Being named is also not the same as being recommended, because an answer can list a product only to set it aside.
Each model answered each question once. This is one dated snapshot from the September 2026 edition, and a later edition can differ. Product names are matched as text, so an answer that calls it “Murf AI” counts for Murf. The answers come from model APIs, which can differ from what the consumer chat apps say. The questions are in English.
The questions also lean one way. Three of the five are framed for a podcaster and one for a realistic voiceover. None asks about e-learning, IVR or corporate training, the work the Murf section above ties to it. A buyer with that job is outside what the panel asked.
Frequently asked questions
Is Murf AI better than ElevenLabs?
The panel does not measure which is better. It measures which is named, and ElevenLabs was named in 50 of 50 answers against Murf’s 37 of 50. The captured guides disagree on sound. One says ElevenLabs produces more natural-sounding voices. Another says Murf is usually the better choice when voice quality is the priority. Run the same script through both before deciding.
Which AI video narrator is the best?
The panel does not rank narrators on quality. Across all five questions, including the realistic-voiceover question, ElevenLabs was named in every answer. Murf was named in 37 of 50 and is described in the recorded answers as a studio and corporate-voiceover option. A narrator who needs to sync voice to picture may also weigh Murf’s video-sync editor.
Which is better, ElevenLabs or Speechify?
The panel measures naming, not quality. In this category ElevenLabs was named in 50 of 50 answers and Speechify in 14 of 50 (Speechify 28%). Speechify was never named first. On these counts the models reach for ElevenLabs far more often. That says nothing about which suits a given buyer.
What’s the most realistic AI voice?
No count can settle realism. What the panel can say is that the models most often attach realism to ElevenLabs. It was named in every answer, and recorded answers from Claude Opus 5 and Gemini call it the benchmark and the gold standard for voice realism. Treat that as what the models say, not as a listening test.
Why is Murf never named first if it appears in most answers?
The models use Murf as an alternative. They open with ElevenLabs in almost every answer, then list Murf among the options for studio workflow or corporate voiceover. That pattern gives Murf the widest named-versus-first gap in the category, at 74 points.
Can ElevenLabs or Murf pay to change these counts?
No. Positions on this page are not sold, sponsored or influenced, and vendors cannot pay to appear, be reordered or be removed. The counts come from the recorded answers for this edition.
