ElevenLabs vs Descript (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say
ElevenLabs is named in 50 of 50 AI answers and first in 47. Descript is named in 36 and first in 2. Model-by-model split, pricing model and when each fits.
AI models name ElevenLabs more often. ElevenLabs appears in 50 of 50 recorded answers and is named first in 47 of 50. Descript appears in 36 of 50 and is named first in 2 of 50. The gap in first position is far wider than the gap in presence. These counts measure which product AI answers name when a buyer asks about AI voice tools, and say nothing about which product is better.
TL;DR
- Expect ElevenLabs to be the first name an AI model gives you. All ten models name it in all five of their answers.
- Descript’s gap with AI models is first position. Its named-versus-first gap is 68 points, against 6 points for ElevenLabs.
- Descript’s best showing came on one question: GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna both opened with Descript when asked which tool to recommend to a podcaster.
- Comparison guides split the two by job. ElevenLabs generates the whole thing from text, and Descript patches a line inside a recording you already have.
- Budget on different units. ElevenLabs charges per character in monthly plans, and Descript per seat per month.
How often do AI models recommend ElevenLabs and Descript?
ElevenLabs is named in every recorded answer. Descript is named in most answers and placed first in almost none.
| Product | Named | Answer share | Named first | First share | Average position | Category rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ElevenLabs | 50/50 | 100% | 47/50 | 94% | 1.08 | 1 of 17 |
| Murf (context) | 37/50 | 74% | 0/50 | 0% | 3.84 | 2 of 17 |
| Descript | 36/50 | 72% | 2/50 | 4% | 2.69 | 3 of 17 |
Answer share is the share of the 50 answers that named the product. Named first is the share where it appeared before any other tracked product. ElevenLabs is the category leader, so it doubles as the reference row. Murf sits between the two on presence and is shown for context.
Order separates the two far more than presence does. Descript 72% sits close to Murf 74%, yet Descript’s average position of 2.69 is the lowest in the category after ElevenLabs. When a model names Descript, it names it near the top. Because ElevenLabs is in every answer and first in 47, Descript’s usual slot is directly behind it. The full answer-by-answer record is in the AI voice category index.
Which models prefer ElevenLabs, and which prefer Descript?
No model names Descript more often than ElevenLabs. All ten name ElevenLabs in all five answers, and Descript’s count moves by model.
| Model | ElevenLabs | Descript |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| ChatGPT | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| Claude Opus 5 | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Claude | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Claude Fable 5 | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| Gemini | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Perplexity | 5/5 | 4/5 |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | 5/5 | 4/5 |
GPT-5.6 Sol is the only model at parity. It names Descript in every answer (Descript 100% for that model). GPT-5.6 Luna, Claude Fable 5, Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro name Descript in 4 of 5. ChatGPT, Claude Opus 5, Claude, Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash name it in 3 of 5 (Descript 60% for each).
By model family, OpenAI and Perplexity lean furthest toward Descript. Across the 15 OpenAI answers the split is ElevenLabs 100% and Descript 80%. Perplexity’s 10 answers show the same Descript 80%. Anthropic sits lower at Descript 66.7%, and Google lowest at Descript 60%. In both of those families Murf is named more often than Descript, at Murf 80% for Anthropic and Murf 70% for Google.
The sharpest disagreement is about order, and it happens on one question. Asked “Which AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool would you recommend to a podcaster in 2026?”, GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna both opened with Descript. Those are Descript’s 2 named-first answers. Sonar Reasoning Pro opened the same question with PlayHT and named Descript Overdub next, with ElevenLabs after it. Every other answer in the sample opened with ElevenLabs, including the answers to the other podcaster questions. The order moved only when a model was asked to recommend a tool to a podcaster.
What do the answers say about each?
The recorded answers mostly assign the two products to different jobs. Four short quotes show the split, with formatting marks removed and the words unchanged.
Claude Opus 5, asked for the best tool for a podcaster:
“ElevenLabs is the default recommendation for most podcasters, with Descript Overdub as the better pick if you want voice generation baked into your editing workflow.”
GPT-5.6 Sol, asked which tool it would recommend to a podcaster:
“Descript is the best practical choice because it integrates AI speech into the complete podcast workflow”
The same GPT-5.6 Sol answer, on when to switch:
“Pick ElevenLabs if voice quality and performance are the priority”
Perplexity (Sonar Pro), asked by a podcaster what to use and why:
“If you want an all-in-one podcast production workflow instead of just voice generation, Descript or Podcastle are better fits because they bundle editing and voice tools into one place.”
Even the answer that led with Descript names ElevenLabs as the pick for voice quality. Perplexity names Podcastle beside Descript as the workflow option.
How do ElevenLabs and Descript differ?
They do different jobs and charge on different units. No vendor-published price is recorded for either product in this edition, so the pricing below comes from third-party comparison guides.
What each product does
ElevenLabs turns text into speech, clones a voice from a sample and dubs existing audio into other languages. Descript edits recorded audio and video through its transcript and patches a misspoken line with a cloned voice. Descript calls its AI voice feature Overdub.
Pricing model
ElevenLabs is priced per character in monthly plans, with cloning and the commercial licence gated to the paid tiers. Descript is priced per seat per month, in tiers set by transcription hours and export resolution. One reviewer puts it plainly: you pay for voice output on one side and an editing suite on the other. Both offer free tiers.
Who each is for
One comparison guide lists ElevenLabs for AI voice generation, API work and voice cloning. The same guide lists Descript for editing, publishing and transcript-based production. Another places a podcast or a recorded course in Descript and a script with no recording behind it in ElevenLabs.
What the models name each for
The recorded answers attach ElevenLabs to realism, cloning and multilingual output. They attach Descript to transcript-based editing and Overdub corrections. The models also cite ElevenLabs’ own site more often. Across the category’s recorded citations, elevenlabs.io is cited 28 times and descript.com 11 times.
When should you pick ElevenLabs?
Pick ElevenLabs when the job is speech generated from a script, and you want the product AI answers reach for first.
- ElevenLabs 100%: named in all 50 answers, by all ten models.
- First in every answer to every question except the podcaster-recommendation one, for 47 of 50 overall.
- One comparison guide says a script with no recording behind it belongs in ElevenLabs.
- Listed as the pick for API work and voice cloning.
The ElevenLabs vendor record holds its measured history across categories.
When should you pick Descript?
Pick Descript when the job is editing speech someone already recorded, with AI voice as a repair tool inside the editor.
- Every one of the ten models names it at least 3 times in 5.
- Apart from ElevenLabs, only Descript and Play.ht were ever named first, and Descript was first more often.
- GPT-5.6 Sol named it in all five answers, level with ElevenLabs.
- One comparison guide says a podcast or a recorded course belongs in Descript.
- Transcript editing is its core product.
- Charges per seat per month.

How this sits against the ElevenLabs vs Descript guides
The ranking guides compare features and pick a product. MEMETIK counts what AI answers name, model by model. None of the guides reports which models name either product.
AIVoiceReview’s guide says the two are not the same type of tool but overlap in AI voice. It carries affiliate links and says it may earn a commission. It says most serious creators need both.
SoloToolkit’s author made the same narration in both tools and concluded they are built for different parts of the job. The page names ElevenLabs as its pick. It discloses that some links are affiliate links.
Mamba Labs puts both products through the same questions it asks on every compare page. It states it has nothing of its own in the category. It also says some of its links are affiliate links.
Solevate scores both products and names ElevenLabs its pick. It frames Descript around podcast and video editing. Its text shows no affiliate disclosure.
All four guides reach the same split by job. The panel adds what they leave out: how often each model names each product, and which models put Descript first on which question.
How the sample was built
10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, edition 2026-09. Each model answered each question once, with web search on.
The five questions, verbatim:
- What is the best AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool for a podcaster? Name specific products.
- Which AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool would you recommend to a podcaster in 2026?
- Compare the top AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool options right now.
- I’m a podcaster and I need an AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool. What should I use and why?
- Best AI voice generation or text-to-speech tool for a realistic voiceover?
The models come from four families. OpenAI supplies GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra) and GPT-5.6 Luna, for 15 answers. Anthropic supplies Claude Opus 5, Claude (Claude Sonnet 5) and Claude Fable 5, for 15 answers. Google supplies Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash) and Gemini 3.5 Flash, for 10 answers. Perplexity supplies Perplexity (Sonar Pro) and Sonar Reasoning Pro, for 10 answers. The method sets out how answers are recorded and counted.
What these counts cannot tell you
The counts record presence in answers. They say nothing about voice quality, editing quality, uptime, support or pricing fairness. Being named differs from being recommended, because an answer can name a product to set it aside. Each model gave one answer per question, on one dated run, in English, through the API. Consumer chat apps can answer differently. Every question asks about AI voice or text-to-speech, and most frame the buyer as a podcaster. Descript’s video-editing role sits outside those questions, so its count reflects how models treat it as a voice tool.
Frequently asked questions
Is there anything better than Descript?
The panel does not rank quality. In AI voice answers, ElevenLabs and Murf are both named more often than Descript. For fixing audio a person already recorded, one comparison guide names Descript as the tool.
Is Descript actually good?
The panel measures how often models name Descript, and every one of the ten models names it. Quality sits outside that count. One reviewer calls Descript’s transcript-based editing workflow excellent.
Is Descript actually free?
Descript has a free plan. One comparison guide says it includes the full transcript editor and basic AI tools. Another lists the free tier as limited. Check Descript’s own plans page before relying on either.
Can you use ElevenLabs and Descript together?
Yes. One reviewer generates narration in ElevenLabs and then edits it by text in Descript. Another guide notes that teams doing both jobs run both tools.
Why do AI models name Descript often but rarely first?
The recorded answers usually lead with a voice generator and add Descript as the editing option. Claude Opus 5 and Perplexity both follow that order in the quotes above. Descript moved to first only when GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna answered the podcaster-recommendation question.
