Cursor vs Claude Code (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say
Cursor and Claude Code were each named in 49 of 50 AI answers. Cursor came first in 24, Claude Code in 19. The model-by-model split, pricing and fit.
Cursor, narrowly. Both products were named in 49 of 50 recorded AI answers, so presence is a tie. The gap is in first mention: Cursor was named first in 24 of 50 answers and Claude Code in 19 of 50.
The counts measure what AI answers name, not which product writes better code.
TL;DR
- Expect both names in almost any AI answer about coding agents. The useful signal is order, and Cursor is put first more often.
- Model by model, the pair is close to inseparable. Eight of the ten models name both in all five answers. ChatGPT names Cursor in all five and Claude Code in four. GPT-5.6 Sol does the reverse.
- Anthropic’s own models give no measurable edge to Claude Code on naming.
- The captured guides split the pair by working style: Cursor for driving an editor, Claude Code for handing a task to an agent.
- Price is the least settled point. The guides agree on Cursor’s entry plan and disagree on Claude Code’s, so check both vendors’ pricing pages before you buy.
How often do AI models recommend Cursor and Claude Code?
Equally often, with Cursor put first more often. Cursor and Claude Code each appear in 49 of the 50 recorded answers in the AI coding agents record. Cursor is the category leader, so no separate reference row is needed. GitHub Copilot is shown as context because it has the same presence count.
| Product | Named | Answer share | Named first | First share | Avg position | Category rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cursor | 49/50 | 98% | 24/50 | 48% | 1.8 | 1 |
| Claude Code | 49/50 | 98% | 19/50 | 38% | 1.88 | 2 |
| GitHub Copilot (context) | 49/50 | 98% | 2/50 | 4% | 3.76 | 3 |
Answer share is the share of recorded answers that named the product. Named first is the share where it came before every other tracked product.
The third row explains the first two. Copilot is named exactly as often as Cursor and Claude Code, yet it comes first in only 2 of 50 answers. In this category, being named is close to universal for the top three, so presence tells a buyer little. Order is where the models differ.
Cursor’s gap between named and named first is 50 points. Claude Code’s is 60 points. The models list Claude Code almost every time, then put another product ahead of it more often than they do with Cursor. The average positions, 1.8 against 1.88, are too close to lean on.
Which models prefer Cursor, and which prefer Claude Code?
Almost none do, on naming. Eight of the ten models name both products in all five answers. The two that separate them split in opposite directions. Each cell below counts how many of that model’s five answers named the product.
| Model | Family | Cursor | Claude Code | Lean on naming |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | OpenAI | 4/5 | 5/5 | Claude Code |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI | 5/5 | 4/5 | Cursor |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | OpenAI | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Claude Opus 5 | Anthropic | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Claude | Anthropic | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Claude Fable 5 | Anthropic | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Gemini | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level | |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level | |
| Perplexity | Perplexity | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | Perplexity | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
OpenAI. The only disagreement sits inside this family, and it runs both ways. GPT-5.6 Sol names Claude Code in all five answers and Cursor in four. ChatGPT names Cursor in all five and Claude Code in four. GPT-5.6 Luna names both every time. Across the family’s 15 answers the pair finishes level, Cursor 93.3% and Claude Code 93.3%.
The OpenAI models also keep other options in view. GitHub Copilot and Codex are each named in all 15 OpenAI answers (GitHub Copilot 100%, Codex 100%). Asked which agent to recommend in 2026, GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna both open with Codex.
Anthropic. Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5 name both products in all 15 of their answers (Cursor 100%, Claude Code 100%). A buyer who suspects models favour their maker’s product will find no sign of it here on naming.
Google and Perplexity. Gemini, Gemini 3.5 Flash, Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro also name both in every answer (Cursor 100%, Claude Code 100%).
The panel’s per-model record lists a leader for each model: Claude Code for GPT-5.6 Sol and Cursor for the other nine. In eight of those nine, the two products are level at 5 of 5, so that label does not show a preference between them. The per-model figures count naming, not order. The first-mention lead of 24 to 19 is a panel-wide count and cannot be split by model from these figures.
What do the answers say about each?
The answers draw the line at the editor and the terminal. Five short extracts:
“For most individual developers, Cursor is currently the best all-around AI-native IDE agent. For terminal-first, deep repo work, Claude Code is often the strongest choice.”
ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra), answering “Compare the top AI coding agent or assistant options right now.”
“Cursor remains the leading choice for general daily software development.”
Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash), answering “Which AI coding agent or assistant would you recommend to a software engineer in 2026?”
“Across nearly every source, Claude Code stands out as the strongest all-around agent, particularly for deep, complex work.”
Claude (Claude Sonnet 5), answering the same question.
“I’m made by Anthropic, which makes Claude Code. That’s a real conflict of interest, so weigh my take accordingly”
Claude Opus 5, answering the same question.
“If you want one default pick, use Cursor for everyday development, or Claude Code if you spend most of your time in the terminal and do a lot of refactoring or multi-file work.”
Perplexity (Sonar Pro), answering “I’m a software engineer and I need an AI coding agent or assistant. What should I use and why?”
The answers rarely treat the two as rivals for one job. They give Cursor everyday editing and Claude Code terminal and multi-file work. Claude Opus 5 states its conflict of interest before it recommends anything.
How do Cursor and Claude Code differ?
On the captured guides, they differ in working style, model choice and how the price is packaged. The panel’s vendor records hold no pricing for either product, so every price below comes from a captured guide. The guides quote dollars without naming the currency.
Cursor. Nimbalyst describes Cursor as an AI-first coding environment built on a VS Code fork. Its models span Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Cursor’s own Composer models. SitePoint lists a free tier with limited completions. SitePoint puts the Pro plan at about $20 a month. Nimbalyst sums up its fit as staying in the editor while moving faster.
Claude Code. Nimbalyst describes Claude Code as Anthropic’s agentic coding product. It runs in the terminal, on desktop, on the web, in VS Code and in JetBrains. SitePoint lists it as supporting Anthropic’s Claude models only. On price the two guides disagree. Nimbalyst says the $20-a-month Claude Pro plan includes Claude Code. SitePoint, writing in February 2026, puts entry at about $100 a month through Claude Max. Nimbalyst sums up its fit as delegating substantial coding tasks.
The pricing difference is one of shape as much as amount. Nimbalyst describes Anthropic’s plan as a broader Claude subscription and Cursor’s as an editor subscription. For heavy use, one developer on a higher Cursor plan writes that Claude API rates through Claude Code would cost him considerably more.
When should you pick Cursor?
Pick Cursor if you want the product the models most often put first and you work inside an editor all day.
- Across the panel it is named first in 24 of 50 answers (Cursor 48%), the highest first-mention count in the category.
- ChatGPT names it in all five answers and Claude Code in four.
- Nimbalyst and SitePoint both put its entry plan at about $20 a month.
- Model choice stays open, because Cursor routes between several providers inside one workflow.
- Pull-request review ships as its own feature: BugBot reviews PRs and proposes fixes on them.
When should you pick Claude Code?
Pick Claude Code if you want to hand whole tasks to an agent and keep the editor you already use.
- Its presence matches Cursor’s, at 49 of 50 answers.
- GPT-5.6 Sol names it in all five answers and Cursor in four.
- No editor switch is needed: it runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, the web or the desktop app.
- If you already pay for Claude, Anthropic bundles Claude Code into paid Claude plans.
- Anthropic ships an official action for running Claude Code in GitHub Actions.
One measured count weighs against it. Claude Code is named first in 19 of 50 answers (Claude Code 38%), so the models list it almost every time but lead with it less often than with Cursor.
How this sits against the Cursor vs Claude Code guides
The captured guides compare features, prices and personal experience. None of the three reports how AI models answer the question.
Kyle Redelinghuys, ksred.com (30 September 2025). One developer’s account of moving his daily work from Claude Code to Cursor’s CLI, mainly for speed and cost with the Grok model. He still reaches for Claude on complex architectural problems. The post promotes his newsletter and consulting work.
Nimbalyst (dated 9 June 2026 in the search result). A feature table across autonomy, editing, models, parallel work, code review, pricing and openness. It suggests using both when a week holds both kinds of task. The page is vendor-written: Nimbalyst makes a visual workspace for building with Claude Code and Codex, and the page promotes it.
SitePoint Team, sitepoint.com (27 February 2026). A setup walkthrough, three worked tasks, context handling and a pricing table. It states that its task comparisons are illustrative and not a controlled benchmark. It describes Claude Code as a terminal agent with no graphical editor. Nimbalyst, writing later, lists desktop, web and IDE surfaces, so the guides date quickly.
Those guides answer which tool to use. The panel counts which tool ten AI models name, and in what order, when a software engineer asks.
How the sample was built
10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers. The panel recorded one answer per model and question on 2 September 2026, for the 2026-09 edition. The five questions, verbatim:
- What is the best AI coding agent or assistant for a software engineer? Name specific products.
- Which AI coding agent or assistant would you recommend to a software engineer in 2026?
- Compare the top AI coding agent or assistant options right now.
- I’m a software engineer and I need an AI coding agent or assistant. What should I use and why?
- Best AI coding agent or assistant for shipping a production codebase?
The ten models form four families. OpenAI gives 15 answers from GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Terra) and GPT-5.6 Luna. Anthropic gives 15 from Claude Opus 5, Claude (Claude Sonnet 5) and Claude Fable 5. Google gives 10 from Gemini (Gemini 3.6 Flash) and Gemini 3.5 Flash. Perplexity gives 10 from Perplexity (Sonar Pro) and Sonar Reasoning Pro. The category tracks 16 vendors, and 12 were named. The full table and per-model split are in the category record. The counting rules are on the method page.
What these counts cannot tell you
They measure presence and order in recorded answers. They say nothing about code quality, speed, reliability, support or fit with a particular stack. Being named is not the same as being recommended, because an answer can name a product only to set it aside. Each model gave one answer per question, so one different answer moves a model’s count by one in five. The run is a single dated snapshot. Products are matched by name, API answers can differ from the same model in a consumer chat app, and every prompt was in English.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for coding, Claude Code or Cursor, in 2026?
The panel does not measure which is better. It measures what AI models name. On that measure the two tie on presence at 49 of 50 answers, and Cursor is named first more often, 24 of 50 against 19 of 50. SitePoint says the question has no universal answer.
Is Cursor more expensive than Claude Code?
Not at entry level, on the captured guides. SitePoint puts Cursor’s Pro plan at about $20 a month. Nimbalyst puts Claude Code’s entry at $20 through Claude Pro. SitePoint puts it at about $100 through Claude Max. For heavy use, one developer reports that Claude API rates would cost him considerably more than his Cursor plan. The panel records no pricing, so confirm current plans with each vendor.
What is better than Claude Code?
No product in the panel is measured as better than Claude Code. Cursor is the one product named first more often, 24 of 50 against 19 of 50. Codex is named in 39 of 50 answers, and two OpenAI models open with it when asked for a 2026 recommendation.
Can you use Cursor and Claude Code together?
Yes. Nimbalyst describes a common setup with Cursor as the editing home base and Claude Code handling larger delegated tasks. The Perplexity (Sonar Pro) answer makes a similar point, suggesting an IDE assistant for flow and an agentic CLI for deeper tasks.
Do Anthropic’s own models favour Claude Code?
Not on naming. Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5 name Cursor and Claude Code in all 15 of their answers. Claude Opus 5 also tells the reader that Anthropic makes Claude Code and to weigh its view accordingly.
Does Cursor support Claude models?
Yes. Nimbalyst says Cursor supports Anthropic’s Claude models alongside OpenAI, Google and Cursor’s own Composer models. That lets a buyer use Claude models without adopting Claude Code itself.
