Clerk vs Auth0 (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say

Clerk is named in 49 of 50 AI answers and first in 29. Auth0 is named in 47 and first in 4. Model-by-model split, pricing and when each fits.

AI models name both products in almost every answer, but they lead with Clerk far more often. Clerk was named in 49 of 50 recorded answers and named first in 29 of 50. Auth0 was named in 47 of 50 and named first in 4 of 50. On presence the two are close. On first place Clerk is clear of Auth0 and of every other auth product in the panel.

The counts come from the 2026-09 edition: ten AI models, five fixed developer-auth questions.

TL;DR

How often do AI models recommend Clerk and Auth0?

Clerk is named more often, named first far more often and sits higher in the answers than Auth0. Clerk is also the developer-auth category leader. WorkOS, third in the category, appears below for context because it is named first more often than Auth0.

Product Named Answer share Named first First share Average position Category rank
Clerk 49/50 Clerk 98% 29/50 Clerk 58% 1.92 1st of 17
Auth0 47/50 Auth0 94% 4/50 Auth0 8% 3.49 2nd of 17
WorkOS (context) 40/50 WorkOS 80% 9/50 WorkOS 18% 2.93 3rd of 17

Answer share is the share of the 50 recorded answers that named the product. First share is the share where it appeared before any other tracked product.

Presence is close. First place is where the two separate. Auth0 is named first in 4 of 50 answers, the same count as Kinde, which is named in only 17 of 50. WorkOS is named first in 9 of 50. Auth0 is on nearly every list and rarely at the head of one.

Average position tells the same story. Clerk averages 1.92, between first and second. Auth0 averages 3.49, behind two or three other products in the average answer. The named-versus-first gap is 40 points for Clerk and 86 points for Auth0. The full record for all 17 products sits in the developer-auth index.

Which models prefer Clerk, and which prefer Auth0?

Every model names Clerk at least as often as Auth0, and no model names Auth0 more often. Clerk edges ahead only in GPT-5.6 Sol and Perplexity, at 5/5 against 4/5. Every other model names the two equally.

Model Family Clerk Auth0
GPT-5.6 Sol OpenAI 5/5 4/5
ChatGPT OpenAI 5/5 5/5
GPT-5.6 Luna OpenAI 5/5 5/5
Claude Opus 5 Anthropic 5/5 5/5
Claude Anthropic 5/5 5/5
Claude Fable 5 Anthropic 5/5 5/5
Gemini Google 5/5 5/5
Gemini 3.5 Flash Google 5/5 5/5
Perplexity Perplexity 5/5 4/5
Sonar Reasoning Pro Perplexity 4/5 4/5

By family, the Anthropic and Google models name both products in every answer: Clerk 100% and Auth0 100%. The OpenAI models name Clerk in every answer and Auth0 in most (Auth0 93.3% of 15). The Perplexity models are the least consistent for both: Clerk 90% and Auth0 80% of 10.

The sharper disagreement sits in who leads each answer, and it follows the question. Most answers to the Next.js question open with Clerk. Claude’s Next.js answer is an exception: it opens with NextAuth / Auth.js.

The B2B SSO question splits the models. ChatGPT, GPT-5.6 Luna and Gemini open that answer with WorkOS. Claude and Sonar Reasoning Pro open it with Auth0. GPT-5.6 Sol also leads its managed-auth answer with WorkOS AuthKit. After Clerk, WorkOS is the product the panel names first most often.

What do the answers say about each?

The recorded answers tie Clerk to fast React and Next.js builds and tie Auth0 to maturity and enterprise SSO. Four short quotes, verbatim from the recorded answers:

“Clerk is the fastest path from zero to working authentication in Next.js.”

Claude Fable 5, answering “Which auth service should I use for a Next.js startup?”

“If you’re B2C/consumer and React-first: Clerk.”

Claude Opus 5, answering “Best managed auth for a startup that wants to avoid building login itself?”

“The most established option.” and “Downside: pricing scales aggressively once you need enterprise SSO connections per customer.”

Claude, describing Auth0 in its answer to the B2B SSO question

“If you want a broader, more established managed auth platform with lots of flexibility, Auth0 is the classic all-around option”

Perplexity, answering “Best managed auth for a startup that wants to avoid building login itself?”

In the same answer that gives consumer apps to Clerk, Claude Opus 5 gives B2B SaaS to WorkOS AuthKit.

How do Clerk and Auth0 differ?

Both sell a free tier and then monthly plans priced by monthly active users. One guide puts Clerk with fast-moving frontend teams and Auth0 with enterprises that have complex needs. The panel’s vendor records for Clerk and Auth0 hold the measured counts only. They record no pricing, so every price below comes from a captured guide.

Pricing model

Clerk is listed with a free tier up to 10,000 monthly active users. Its Pro plan is listed at $25 a month. Users above the included 10,000 are listed at $0.02 each. The page does not state a currency.

Auth0 is listed with a free tier up to 7,500 monthly active users. Its Essential plan is listed at $175 a month for 10,000 monthly active users. One guide rates Auth0’s pricing at scale as high and Clerk’s as moderate to high.

Treat the Clerk figures as a dated snapshot. Several recorded answers cite a newer Clerk plan structure than the one that guide lists. Model cost from each vendor’s own pricing page.

Who each is for

A second guide describes Clerk as tuned for React, Next.js and similar stacks. The same page calls Auth0 the broader and more configurable platform. A third ranks Clerk best for Next.js apps and Auth0 best for enterprise apps.

What each is built around

Clerk ships pre-built components such as <SignIn /> and <UserButton />. Auth0 lets teams customise behaviour through Rules, Actions and Hooks. Okta acquired Auth0 in 2021.

When should you pick Clerk?

Pick Clerk if your app runs on React or Next.js and you want sign-in working with little backend work. Each reason below is a panel count or a claim from a captured guide.

When should you pick Auth0?

Pick Auth0 if your app needs deep configuration, broad protocol support or enterprise compliance. Each reason below is a panel count or a claim from a captured guide.

Where each one leads: Clerk leads on every measured count in the panel. Auth0 leads the captured guides on configurability and compliance, which the panel does not measure.

How this sits against the Clerk vs Auth0 guides

The four comparison pages captured from Google’s Australian results for “Clerk vs Auth0” compare features, price and deals. None of them reports what AI models say.

The Alain Guillot post compares Auth0, Clerk and SuperTokens. It calls Clerk designed for front-end developers. It links to SuperTokens’ own Auth0 vs Clerk post.

The App Stack Builder page compares Clerk, Auth0 and Supabase Auth on price, features and setup time. It names Clerk the best overall choice for startups. The page also promotes its own AI-powered stack generator.

The SaaSOffers page is a startup-deal comparison. It frames Clerk around $1,000 in credits and Auth0 around an extended free tier. Its deals are available to SaaSOffers Premium members at $79 a year.

The CIAM Wiki page scores both vendors on a 62-capability model and has Auth0 leading more capability areas. It says its bands are directional and drawn from each vendor’s own documentation. It states that sponsorship never affects the bands and links to a paid premium comparison.

The guides also disagree with each other on setup time. App Stack Builder lists Clerk at 5 to 10 minutes and Auth0 at 4 to 8 hours. SaaSOffers puts basic Clerk auth in a Next.js app at about 15 to 30 minutes. It puts Auth0 integration at 1 to 4 hours using the Quickstart guides.

Those guides compare features. The panel counts what AI answers name, model by model, and none of the four pages carries that split.

How the sample was built

The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, with one answer recorded per model and question. The five questions, verbatim:

  1. “What is the best authentication provider for a new SaaS app? Name specific products.”
  2. “Which auth service should I use for a Next.js startup?”
  3. “Compare the top user authentication platforms for startups.”
  4. “I’m building a B2B app and need SSO and user management. What do you recommend?”
  5. “Best managed auth for a startup that wants to avoid building login itself?”

The models by family: OpenAI (GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT, GPT-5.6 Luna) gave 15 answers. Anthropic (Claude Opus 5, Claude, Claude Fable 5) gave 15. Google (Gemini, Gemini 3.5 Flash) gave 10. Perplexity (Perplexity, Sonar Reasoning Pro) gave 10. The panel tracks 17 auth products and all 17 were named at least once. The method explains how answers are recorded and counted. The recorded answers sit in the developer-auth index.

What these counts cannot tell you

The counts measure how often AI answers name a product. They say nothing about security, uptime, support, pricing fairness or fit with your stack. Being named also differs from being recommended, because an answer can list a product only to warn against it. Each model answered each question once, so a second run could shift a count. The figures are one dated snapshot from the 2026-09 edition. Names are matched as strings, and an answer counts for Auth0 when it names either Auth0 or Okta. The answers came through model APIs, which can differ from consumer chat apps, and every prompt was in English. The five questions are framed around startups, SaaS and Next.js, so the counts describe that buyer better than a large enterprise buying workforce identity. No vendor can pay to appear, move or be removed.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main competitors of Auth0?

In the panel’s developer-auth answers, the products named most often besides Auth0 are Clerk (49 of 50), WorkOS (40 of 50) and Supabase Auth (37 of 50). Firebase Auth follows at 21 of 50. On the B2B SSO question, several models lead with WorkOS ahead of Auth0.

What is Clerk OAuth?

Clerk OAuth is Clerk’s social sign-in, and Clerk supports social OAuth providers including Google, GitHub, Apple and Microsoft. Clerk handles the complete OAuth flow once the providers are configured in the Clerk dashboard.

Are OAuth and Auth0 the same thing?

No. Auth0 is a commercial identity platform, and Okta acquired it in 2021. OAuth is a sign-in protocol that platforms such as Auth0 and Clerk implement. One guide lists advanced OAuth and SSO capabilities among Auth0’s features. The panel counts Auth0 only when an answer names Auth0 or Okta, so a mention of OAuth alone adds nothing to Auth0’s count.

Is Clerk safe to use?

The panel cannot answer that, because it counts names and does not test security. It does show that Clerk appears in 49 of 50 recorded answers and that all ten models name it. For a security decision, read Clerk’s own compliance and security documentation and test it against your requirements.

Do these counts change over time?

They can. The panel runs as monthly editions, and these figures belong to the 2026-09 edition. Each edition re-asks the same five questions, so the counts for Clerk and Auth0 can move from one month to the next.
