Auth0 vs WorkOS (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say
Auth0 is named in 47 of 50 AI answers, WorkOS in 40. WorkOS is named first 9 times to Auth0's 4. Split by model: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity.
AI models name Auth0 more often. Auth0 appears in 47 of 50 recorded answers and WorkOS in 40. WorkOS is named first more often, in 9 of 50 answers against 4 for Auth0. So Auth0 makes more shortlists and WorkOS heads more of them. Both sit behind Clerk, the category leader.
The counts cover ten AI models answering five developer-auth questions in the September 2026 edition.
TL;DR
- Auth0 reaches more shortlists. Seven of the ten models name it in all five of their answers.
- WorkOS reaches the top of the list more often. Its average position is 2.93 against 3.49 for Auth0.
- The gap comes from the three Claude models and GPT-5.6 Luna. GPT-5.6 Sol is the only model that names WorkOS more often than Auth0.
- Ask a Gemini or Sonar model and the two come out level. Each of those four models names both products equally often.
- IDSync lists Auth0 pricing as MAU-based and WorkOS pricing per SSO or Directory Sync connection per month.
How often do AI models recommend Auth0 and WorkOS?
Auth0 is named in more answers. WorkOS is named first in more answers. Neither leads the category. Clerk does, and it sits in the table below as the reference row.
Answer share is the share of the 50 recorded answers that named the product. Named first counts the answers where it appeared before any other tracked product.
| Product | Named | Answer share | Named first | First share | Average position | Category rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clerk (category leader, reference) | 49/50 | 98% | 29/50 | 58% | 1.92 | 1 |
| Auth0 | 47/50 | 94% | 4/50 | 8% | 3.49 | 2 |
| WorkOS | 40/50 | 80% | 9/50 | 18% | 2.93 | 3 |
The two products trade places depending on the measure. Auth0 is the more common name. WorkOS is the more common opener.
Auth0’s named share runs 86 points ahead of its first share. That is the widest gap of the 17 products tracked in this category. The models list Auth0 as a standard option and seldom start with it. WorkOS carries a 62-point gap. It turns up in fewer answers, and when it does it tends to sit nearer the top.
The sources behind the answers lean the other way. The recorded answers cite workos.com 83 times and auth0.com 21 times. So the models name Auth0 more often while citing WorkOS’s own site more often. Citation coverage varies by model, so treat those two counts as a pattern in this sample. Every answer, source and per-model count sits in the full developer-auth record.
Which models prefer Auth0, and which prefer WorkOS?
Five of the ten models name Auth0 more often than WorkOS. One names WorkOS more often. Four name both equally. The figures below count how many of each model’s five answers named the product.
| Model | Family | Auth0 | WorkOS | Leans to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | OpenAI | 4/5 | 5/5 | WorkOS |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | OpenAI | 5/5 | 4/5 | Auth0 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | OpenAI | 5/5 | 3/5 | Auth0 |
| Claude Opus 5 | Anthropic | 5/5 | 4/5 | Auth0 |
| Claude Sonnet 5 | Anthropic | 5/5 | 3/5 | Auth0 |
| Claude Fable 5 | Anthropic | 5/5 | 3/5 | Auth0 |
| Gemini 3.6 Flash | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level | |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level | |
| Sonar Pro | Perplexity | 4/5 | 4/5 | Level |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | Perplexity | 4/5 | 4/5 | Level |
The Anthropic models open the widest gap. Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Fable 5 each name Auth0 in all five answers and WorkOS in three. Across the family that comes to Auth0 (100% of Anthropic answers) against WorkOS (66.7% of Anthropic answers). In this sample, every Claude answer named Auth0 and most named WorkOS.
OpenAI is split inside the family. GPT-5.6 Luna matches the Claude pattern at five against three. GPT-5.6 Terra, the ChatGPT model in the panel, names Auth0 in five answers and WorkOS in four. GPT-5.6 Sol reverses the order. It names WorkOS in all five answers and Auth0 in four, and it also names AuthKit in all five. The family totals are Auth0 (93.3% of OpenAI answers) and WorkOS (80% of OpenAI answers).
Google and Perplexity keep the pair level. Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash name both products in every answer. Sonar Pro and Sonar Reasoning Pro each name both in four of five. In this sample the gap between Auth0 and WorkOS appears only in OpenAI and Anthropic answers.
What do the answers say about each?
The recorded answers describe Auth0 by its breadth and WorkOS by its enterprise job. Five short lines from the September 2026 answers show the pattern.
On Auth0:
“The most established option.”
Claude Sonnet 5, answering the B2B SSO question, on “Auth0 / Okta”
“Auth0 is the classic all-around option”
Sonar Pro, answering the managed-auth question
On WorkOS:
“Default recommendation: WorkOS for enterprise features”
GPT-5.6 Terra, answering the B2B SSO question
“If you’re B2B SaaS: WorkOS AuthKit.”
Claude Opus 5, answering the managed-auth question
On WorkOS, from an answer that also lists Auth0 for a full identity layer:
“Use WorkOS if you already have basic auth and mainly need enterprise SSO + user / org management on top.”
Sonar Reasoning Pro, answering the B2B SSO question
Every WorkOS line above carries a condition: B2B, enterprise features or an existing login. The Auth0 lines carry none. These are five selected lines from 50 answers. They illustrate framing, and the tables above carry the counts.
How do Auth0 and WorkOS differ?
The captured guides separate the two on billing and buyer. IDSync lists Auth0 as MAU-based and WorkOS as priced per enterprise connection.
Pricing model
IDSync records Auth0’s pricing model as MAU-based, with M2M tokens priced separately and enterprise plans available. It records WorkOS as priced per SSO or Directory Sync connection per month. A pricing summary on daily.dev describes WorkOS’s per-connection pricing as graduated. The same summary says Auth0 bundles connections into MAU-based plans, with sales quotes beyond the bundle. SSOJet, one of the vendors it compares, published that analysis. Startupik warns that Auth0’s MAU-based pricing may become expensive at large scale. It describes WorkOS pricing as tied to enterprise features instead of all users in the app. This page records pricing models only. Startupik tells readers to verify details on each vendor’s website before deciding.
Who each is for
IDSync lists Auth0 for startup, mid-market and enterprise companies. It lists WorkOS for startup and mid-market companies. Startupik calls Auth0 a general-purpose identity platform covering B2C, B2B, developer tools and consumer apps. It describes WorkOS as a layer that can sit on top of an existing auth solution.
Who owns them
Auth0 is now part of Okta. IDSync says it operates as Okta Customer Identity Cloud. No parent company for WorkOS appears in the captured pages.
What the models name them for
The quoted answers attach WorkOS to B2B and enterprise SSO. They attach Auth0 to age and range.
When should you pick Auth0?
Pick Auth0 if you want the product AI models shortlist more often, or one platform for consumer and business login.
- It appears in 47 of 50 answers, and every Anthropic and Google model names it in all five of theirs.
- Startupik fits Auth0 to teams building authentication from scratch who want a complete identity layer.
- IDSync calls it particularly strong for apps that need both consumer login and enterprise SSO.
- MAU-based pricing suits replacing the whole auth system, according to Startupik.
Weigh this against its first share. The models open with Auth0 in 4 of 50 answers, so it is usually on the list and rarely at the top.
When should you pick WorkOS?
Pick WorkOS if you sell B2B software, already have login working and need enterprise SSO added. Pick it too if you want the product models more often name first.
- The models open with it in 9 of 50 answers, against 4 for Auth0.
- GPT-5.6 Sol, Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash name it in every answer.
- Startupik fits WorkOS to B2B SaaS startups with an existing auth system whose buyers ask for SAML SSO, SCIM, directory sync and audit logs.
- IDSync points it at B2B SaaS companies losing enterprise deals for lack of SAML SSO, SCIM directory sync or audit logs.
- Startupik calls its usage-based pricing attractive when only a subset of customers need enterprise features.
Weigh this against its reach. WorkOS appears in 40 of 50 answers, and three models name it in only three of five.
How this sits against the Auth0 vs WorkOS guides
The pages that rank for this query compare features and prices. This page counts what AI answers name. Five of them were captured on 28 September 2026.
Startupik: Auth0 vs WorkOS, Enterprise Authentication Platforms Compared
A feature table, pricing models, use cases, pros and cons. It closes with a hybrid option: Auth0 as the primary identity provider with WorkOS added for enterprise directory sync. Startupik is a startup publication with a weekly email brief.
Startupik: WorkOS vs Auth0, Enterprise Authentication Tools Compared
The same publisher covers the same pair in reverse order. It adds that both platforms offer startup and partner programs. It also warns that managing two identity stacks adds complexity.
IDSync: Auth0 vs WorkOS, Identity Tool Comparison
A directory attribute table covering best fit, pricing model, company size, deployment and integrations. The page states that sponsored placement is disclosed where applicable.
NHIMG: Auth0 to WorkOS migration, what changes for IAM teams?
A forum post based on content published by WorkOS. It reports, citing WorkOS, that scaling, pricing and enterprise feature constraints typically drive teams from Auth0 to WorkOS.
daily.dev: Enterprise Authentication Pricing 2026
A summary of a pricing breakdown across WorkOS, Auth0, Okta and SSOJet, built from each vendor’s public pricing pages. SSOJet, a competing vendor, published the analysis.
The captured pages carry no count of what AI assistants say. The per-model split above is the part a buyer cannot get from them: which assistant names which product, and how often.
How the sample was built
10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers. Each model answered each question once, with web search on. The five questions, verbatim:
- What is the best authentication provider for a new SaaS app? Name specific products.
- Which auth service should I use for a Next.js startup?
- Compare the top user authentication platforms for startups.
- I’m building a B2B app and need SSO and user management. What do you recommend?
- Best managed auth for a startup that wants to avoid building login itself?
The ten models come from four families. OpenAI: GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna, with 15 answers. Anthropic: Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Fable 5, with 15 answers. Google: Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash, with 10 answers. Perplexity: Sonar Pro and Sonar Reasoning Pro, with 10 answers. The panel tracks 17 products in this category, and all 17 were named at least once. The method page sets out how answers are recorded and counted. The category record holds every answer.
What these counts cannot tell you
These counts measure presence in AI answers. They say nothing about uptime, security, support, pricing fairness or fit with a particular stack. Being named also differs from being recommended, because an answer can list a product only to warn against it. So the heading above that asks which models “prefer” each product reports which models name it more often.
- The panel records one answer per model and question. A second run could differ.
- This is one snapshot from the September 2026 edition.
- Mentions are matched by name. An answer that names Okta counts toward Auth0. AuthKit has its own row, so an answer that writes “WorkOS AuthKit” counts toward both WorkOS and AuthKit.
- Answers come through each model’s API. Consumer chat apps can answer differently.
- The prompts are in English and framed around startups and SaaS apps. They do not sample a large enterprise weighing a migration.
The method page covers the full counting rules.
Frequently asked questions
Is WorkOS worth it?
This panel can’t measure worth. It shows WorkOS in 40 of 50 answers and first in 9 of them. Startupik says WorkOS lets a team pay for enterprise identity features instead of all monthly active users. It calls that model attractive for B2B SaaS where only a subset of customers need enterprise SSO and directory sync.
What are the main competitors of Auth0?
In this panel, the products named most often in the same category are Clerk (49 of 50 answers), WorkOS (40), Supabase Auth (37) and Firebase Auth (21). Clerk is the only one named more often than Auth0.
Why is Auth0 so expensive?
The panel does not measure price. The captured guides trace Auth0’s cost to how it bills. Startupik says Auth0 can be economical for small user bases but may become costly as MAU grows. It adds that advanced add-ons such as extensive MFA, anomaly detection or complex enterprise federation push that cost up. A WorkOS-sourced migration post lists pricing among the reasons teams move from Auth0.
What’s the difference between OAuth and Auth0?
OAuth is a protocol and Auth0 is a product that implements it. Startupik lists OAuth2 among the protocols Auth0 supports, with OpenID Connect, SAML and WS-Fed. Its second guide lists OAuth 2.0 among the protocols WorkOS supports. So choosing between Auth0 and WorkOS is a vendor choice, and OAuth sits underneath both.
Can Auth0 and WorkOS be used together?
Yes, and one captured guide describes it. Startupik outlines a hybrid with Auth0 as the primary identity provider and WorkOS for enterprise directory sync. Its second guide warns that running two identity stacks adds complexity.
