Amazon SES vs Postmark (2026): What ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Say
Amazon SES is named in 48 of 50 AI answers and Postmark in 47. Postmark is named first in 15, Amazon SES in 2. The model-by-model split and when each fits.
Amazon SES is named slightly more often: in 48 of 50 recorded AI answers, against 47 of 50 for Postmark. Postmark is named first far more often: in 15 of 50 answers, against 2 of 50 for Amazon SES. The two are level on presence, and Postmark leads clearly on first position. These counts come from 10 AI models answering 5 fixed buyer questions in the 2026-09 edition. They measure which names appear, never which product is better.
TL;DR
- Presence will not separate these two. Both appear in almost every answer, and the gap is one answer.
- Position separates them. Postmark is the name models open with, first in 15 of 50 answers. Amazon SES is first in 2.
- The lean follows the model family. OpenAI models name Amazon SES more often, Perplexity models name Postmark more often, and Anthropic and Google models name both every time.
- Resend leads the category at 50 of 50 answers and 28 named first. A buyer choosing between Amazon SES and Postmark is choosing between the models’ second and third names.
- The captured comparison pages record Amazon SES as pay-as-you-go and Postmark as monthly plans based on email volume.
How often do AI models recommend Amazon SES and Postmark?
Amazon SES is named in 48 of 50 answers and Postmark in 47 of 50, so both sit at the top of the scale. The difference is where each lands in the answer. Postmark is named first 15 times with an average position of 1.91. Amazon SES is named first twice with an average position of 3.4.
| Product | Named | Answer share | Named first | First share | Average position | Category rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resend (category leader, for reference) | 50/50 | 100% | 28/50 | 56% | 1.84 | 1 |
| Amazon SES | 48/50 | 96% | 2/50 | 4% | 3.4 | 2 |
| Postmark | 47/50 | 94% | 15/50 | 30% | 1.91 | 3 |
Answer share is the share of the 50 recorded answers that name the product. Named first means the product appeared before any other tracked product in that answer.
The gap between the two measures carries the finding. It is widest for Amazon SES (96% named, 4% named first), at 92 points, the largest gap of the 12 products named in this category. Postmark’s gap is 64 points. Put plainly, the models treat Amazon SES as a name that belongs on the list and Postmark as a name worth leading with. Neither pattern says anything about which product sends email better.
Which models prefer Amazon SES, and which prefer Postmark?
GPT-5.6 Sol and ChatGPT name Amazon SES more often than Postmark. Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro lean towards Postmark. The remaining models name both products in all 5 of their answers.
| Model | Family | Amazon SES | Postmark | Leans towards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | OpenAI | 5/5 | 4/5 | Amazon SES |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI | 5/5 | 3/5 | Amazon SES |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | OpenAI | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Claude Opus 5 | Anthropic | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Claude | Anthropic | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Claude Fable 5 | Anthropic | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level |
| Gemini | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level | |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 5/5 | 5/5 | Level | |
| Perplexity | Perplexity | 4/5 | 5/5 | Postmark |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | Perplexity | 4/5 | 5/5 | Postmark |
ChatGPT is the sharpest split. It names Amazon SES in every answer and Postmark in 3 of 5, the lowest count either product gets from any model. Across the OpenAI family that works out to Amazon SES 100% and Postmark 80%. The Perplexity family reverses it, with Postmark 100% and Amazon SES 80%. Anthropic and Google name both products in every answer.
The misses sit on the questions that ask for a personal pick. Amazon SES was left out only on “Which transactional email API would you recommend to a developer in 2026?”. Postmark was left out on that question and on “I’m a developer and I need a transactional email API. What should I use and why?”. On the other questions, all ten models named both products. When a model gives one recommendation to one developer, either product can fall off the answer. When it compares or lists options, both stay in.
What do the answers say about each?
The recorded answers give Amazon SES a set of conditions and give Postmark a job.
- GPT-5.6 Luna: “Choose Amazon SES if you send large volumes and are comfortable operating more of the email infrastructure yourself.”
- Claude Opus 5: “Postmark if deliverability and reliability are paramount, and Amazon SES if you’re cost-sensitive at high volume and already on AWS.”
- ChatGPT: “I’d choose Postmark when deliverability and operational simplicity matter more than shaving every dollar off the bill.”
- Claude Fable 5: “Postmark is better when deliverability track record and transactional-only discipline are non-negotiable”
- Sonar Reasoning Pro, recommending Mailtrap and Postmark, says both “avoid the complexity of raw cloud email like AWS SES”.
The Sonar Reasoning Pro answer counts as a mention of Amazon SES. It also gives a reason to pick something else. A count of names cannot tell a recommendation from a warning.
How do Amazon SES and Postmark differ?
Amazon SES bills per email on a pay-as-you-go model. Postmark sells monthly plans based on email volume. The other differences follow from that pricing and from who each vendor lets in.
| Amazon SES | Postmark | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Pay-as-you-go | Monthly plans based on email volume |
| Listed as best for | High-volume senders and AWS users | SaaS businesses and transactional email |
| Gate before sending | Starts in sandbox mode and needs approval for production sending | Reviews new customers before approving sending |
| Free tier | Time-limited and restricted to EC2 users | Described as essentially a sandbox |
| Vendor’s own description | “Get reliable, scalable email to communicate with customers at the lowest industry prices” | “The email delivery service that people actually like” |
| What the AI answers attach to it | Cost at high volume and an existing AWS setup | Deliverability for critical transactional mail |
Amazon SES charges no overages because it is billed purely on use.
The captured pages tie Amazon SES to the AWS stack. One lists its integration with Lambda, CloudWatch, EventBridge, IAM and Amazon S3. The same page says a new account needs sandbox approval, IAM configuration, CloudWatch monitoring and manual bounce handling before its first production email.
Postmark is recorded as a transactional-only service for password resets, account verification, receipts and notifications. Its Message Streams keep transactional email separate from other traffic.
The pages disagree on marketing email. ConvertNow lists limited marketing support for Amazon SES. PowerMTA Providers says Amazon SES includes no marketing features. The same page says Postmark refuses marketing workloads by policy. Mailer To Go says Postmark has integrated with marketing, sales and CRM workflows since ActiveCampaign acquired it. A buyer who needs marketing email alongside receipts should confirm the current position with each vendor.
Both products have an official MCP server for AI-agent workflows, according to Mailer To Go’s roundup.
When should you pick Amazon SES?
Pick Amazon SES if your product already runs on AWS and your team can operate its own sending.
- The models name it in 48 of 50 answers, and no model names it in fewer than 4 of 5.
- OpenAI models name it in every answer, at Amazon SES 100% across that family.
- Billing is pay-as-you-go, with no monthly plan to size.
- It connects to Lambda, CloudWatch, EventBridge, IAM and Amazon S3.
- GPT-5.6 Luna and Claude Opus 5 both tie it to high volume, and Claude Opus 5 adds an existing AWS setup.
The counts also carry a warning. Amazon SES is named first in only 2 of 50 answers, so the models rarely offer it as the default. Production sending also needs approval out of the sandbox.
When should you pick Postmark?
Pick Postmark if your email is transactional only and you want a monthly plan with the sending controls already built.
- The models name it first in 15 of 50 answers, the highest named-first count in the category after Resend.
- Its average position is 1.91, close to the category leader’s 1.84.
- Perplexity models name it in every answer, at Postmark 100% across that family.
- It focuses on time-sensitive application email such as password resets and receipts.
- Message Streams separate transactional sending from other traffic.
The counts carry a warning here as well. ChatGPT names Postmark in only 3 of 5 answers. Postmark also reviews new customers before they can send.
Some teams use both. Mailer To Go describes routing bulk notifications through Amazon SES and password resets through Postmark.
How this sits against the Amazon SES vs Postmark guides
Forward Email, ConvertNow and Mailer To Go each sell an email service and promote it on their comparison page.
Forward Email publishes mirror pages, one titled each way round. Each opens by recommending Forward Email as the best alternative to the product in its title. Each carries a notice that Forward Email is not affiliated with either vendor. The body is a feature grid covering SMTP, API, storage and attachments.
ConvertNow’s comparison begins by pitching ConvertNow as a third option. It then compares the two products on setup, developer experience, deliverability, pricing and scalability.
PowerMTA Providers reports a head-to-head buyer trial and names Amazon SES the trial leader. The page shows a different trial score for Postmark on its scorecard from the one in its summary text. The page names Marieke de Vries as its author.
Mailer To Go’s roundup covers both products alongside other providers. It positions its own product between Amazon SES and Postmark, with SES-level economics and Postmark-level simplicity.
Those pages compare features, prices and trial results. This page counts which names AI answers produce, model by model. The per-model split and the named-first gap above appear on none of them.
How the sample was built
The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers. Each model answered each question once.
The models come from OpenAI (GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 Luna), Anthropic (Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5), Google (Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash) and Perplexity (Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro).
The five questions, verbatim:
- “What is the best transactional email API for a developer? Name specific products.”
- “Which transactional email API would you recommend to a developer in 2026?”
- “Compare the top transactional email API options right now.”
- “I’m a developer and I need a transactional email API. What should I use and why?”
- “Best transactional email API for a SaaS sending signup and receipt emails?”
The edition tracked 14 vendors and 12 were named. The full method is at /method. The category record, with every answer and the full per-model split, is at /index/transactional-email. Each product’s own record is at /vendors/amazon-ses and /vendors/postmark.
What these counts cannot tell you
These counts measure presence in AI answers. They do not measure deliverability, uptime, support, price fairness or fit with your stack. Being named also differs from being recommended, as the Sonar Reasoning Pro answer shows.
The sample has fixed edges. Each model gave one answer per question, in one dated snapshot, through the API. Consumer chat apps can answer differently. The prompts are in English. Names are matched as strings, so “SES” and “AWS SES” count as Amazon SES. All five questions ask about a transactional email API for a developer or a SaaS. The counts say nothing about how models treat these products for marketing email or enterprise buying.
