The alternatives the models name most after Midjourney are Adobe Firefly (48 of 50), Ideogram (35), GPT Image (34), Recraft (27), Nano Banana (18) and Canva (18).

Where does Midjourney sit in AI answers?

Midjourney sits second of the 15 named vendors in AI image generation. It trails Adobe Firefly on first mentions only.

Measured: named in 48 of 50 (Midjourney 96%), first in 17 of 50 (Midjourney 34%), average position 2.

That average position is the lowest in the category. When a model names Midjourney, it names it near the top. Every model except GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 5 names it in all five answers. Claude Opus 5 is the only model whose top name is Midjourney. Midjourney’s own documentation site, docs.midjourney.com, is cited 12 times in the recorded answers.

Gemini 3.6 Flash puts it first in its comparison, as best for “Unmatched aesthetic beauty, photorealism, and artistic styles.” Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Fable 5 file it under concept art and mood boards. 1. Adobe Firefly

Pick Adobe Firefly instead of Midjourney if your work finishes in Photoshop or Illustrator, because that workflow fit is the reason the models give when they name it first.

Measured: named in 48 of 50 (Adobe Firefly 96%), first in 18 of 50 (Adobe Firefly 36%), average position 2.71.

Adobe Firefly is the only alternative that matches Midjourney’s count. The two tie on names, and Firefly leads on first mentions by one. The recorded answers give it a different job. GPT-5.6 Terra opens one answer with “My default recommendation for a working designer in 2026: Adobe Firefly”, then argues from production workflow and commercial use, not from how the image looks. All three OpenAI models name it in every answer, against Midjourney (93.3% of OpenAI answers), and all three put it at the top. The models also lean on Adobe’s own pages: helpx.adobe.com is cited 12 times and adobe.com 11 times. Buyers who want the likely opening name have the count on Firefly’s side. Pick Ideogram instead of Midjourney when the image has to carry readable words, such as posters, banners or social graphics, because that is the job the models name it for.

Measured: named in 35 of 50 (Ideogram 70%), first in 0 of 50 (Ideogram 0%), average position 4.34.

Ideogram has the widest gap in the category between being named and being named first: 70 points. It turns up in 35 answers and leads none. That pattern marks a specialist. Its average position of 4.34 puts it behind the general generators in most lists, as the tool for one task. Sonar Pro’s product-marketing answer names it for clean in-image text on banners and social graphics. That is the job the answers keep giving it. Pick GPT Image instead of Midjourney if you would rather refine an image by talking to it inside ChatGPT, and if the assistants you care about include Claude Sonnet 5 or Sonar Reasoning Pro, which name it in every answer.

Measured: named in 34 of 50 (GPT Image 68%), first in 3 of 50 (GPT Image 6%), average position 3.21.

GPT Image is counted whenever an answer names GPT Image, ChatGPT or DALL-E, so part of its count is ChatGPT the product. Sonar Pro calls OpenAI’s model “the strongest all-around pick in several 2026 roundups and blind-leaderboard rankings”. Support depends on where the buyer asks. Sonar Reasoning Pro and Claude Sonnet 5 name it every time, while Gemini 3.6 Flash names it twice and Gemini 3.5 Flash once. Its average position of 3.21 is earlier than Ideogram’s or Recraft’s, so when it is named it tends to sit high in the list. It is rarely the opening name, though. 4. Recraft

Pick Recraft instead of Midjourney if the output has to be vectors, icons or brand assets, and if your buyers lean on Anthropic models, which name it far more often than OpenAI’s.

Measured: named in 27 of 50 (Recraft 54%), first in 4 of 50 (Recraft 8%), average position 4.37.

Recraft splits by model family: Recraft (86.7% of Anthropic answers) against Recraft (26.7% of OpenAI answers). The job is consistent wherever it appears. Claude Fable 5 describes it as “particularly useful for design assets and vectors, icons, and brand assets”, and Gemini 3.5 Flash lists it first for brand identity and graphic design. Its 4 first mentions beat GPT Image’s 3, so the models that know it are willing to lead with it. The catch for a buyer is reach. Ask an OpenAI model and Recraft may not come up at all. Pick Nano Banana instead of Midjourney if you want the tool that the models place early when they do name it, and you accept that it is named in 18 of 50 answers.

Measured: named in 18 of 50 (Nano Banana 36%), first in 5 of 50 (Nano Banana 10%), average position 3.67.

Nano Banana is the reverse of Ideogram. It is named less often, but it opens answers more often: 5 firsts on 18 mentions. Claude Opus 5 calls it “Currently the consensus front-runner.” Sonar Reasoning Pro builds one designer answer around it as the main generator. Google’s own models are not its strongest supporters: Nano Banana (40% of Google answers). The panel counts it when an answer says Nano Banana or Gemini, so some of these mentions may refer to the Gemini app rather than the image model. Pick Canva instead of Midjourney only if the image is one step in a layout you finish in the same app, because the models name it as a place to assemble designs.

Measured: named in 18 of 50 (Canva 36%), first in 0 of 50 (Canva 0%), average position 4.17.

Canva is named as a companion to Midjourney more than a replacement. Claude Sonnet 5 twice says a Midjourney image will likely be paired with Canva or Figma for final composition. That frames Canva as the finishing step, where an image becomes a post, a deck or a flyer, not as the generator. It is never the first name in an answer. Its spread is broad but thin, with every model naming it at least once and none more than three times. A buyer who mainly needs finished social graphics may find Canva covers both steps. A buyer who needs the image itself will find the models point elsewhere first.

Leonardo’s guide says Canva lets you generate an image and add it to templates in the same app.

Where do the models disagree?

The models do not agree on a leader. Adobe Firefly is the top name for every model except Claude Opus 5, which leads with Midjourney, and Claude Sonnet 5, which leads with GPT Image.

Midjourney and Adobe Firefly are the two near-complete rows, at 48 of 50 each. The split for Midjourney reads Midjourney (100% of Google and Perplexity answers), with one answer dropped each at GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 5.

Recraft is the only row that runs from 0/5 to 5/5. Claude Sonnet 5 names it in every answer and GPT-5.6 Terra in none.

GPT Image splits inside one family. Sonar Reasoning Pro names it in every answer, while Sonar Pro names it in two. Gemini 3.5 Flash names it once.

The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, taken for the September 2026 edition. Each model answered each prompt once. The five prompts, verbatim:

The ten models come from four families. OpenAI supplies 15 answers from GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna. Anthropic supplies 15 from Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Fable 5. Google supplies 10 from Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash. Perplexity supplies 10 from Sonar Pro and Sonar Reasoning Pro. The panel tracks 16 vendors and 15 were named. Reve was never named. Cuty AI’s list is published by Cuty AI and puts Cuty AI first. It includes Midjourney itself at seventh. Several entries are video tools, such as DomoAI, Nim Video and Deevid AI. Apart from Midjourney, its one overlap with the panel’s tracked vendors is OpenArt, named in 12 of 50 answers.

Dan Kieft’s YouTube video was uploaded in May 2024. It ranks ChatGPT with GPT-4o first and Leonardo AI second among seven free tools. Its description links to the creator’s own AI toolkit page.

None of the four captured pages gives Recraft or Nano Banana an entry of its own. What this page adds is the measured layer those guides do not have: how often each model names each tool, how often it names it first, and where the models split.

What these counts cannot tell you

These counts measure presence in answers. They say nothing about image quality, licensing, support or price fairness. Being named differs from being recommended, and an answer can name a product to warn against it. Each model answered each prompt once, so one run is a dated snapshot. Vendors are matched by strings: Adobe Firefly counts on “Adobe”, GPT Image on “ChatGPT” or “DALL”, and Nano Banana on “Gemini”. The answers came through APIs and can differ from consumer chat apps. All prompts were in English. No vendor can pay to appear, be reordered or be removed.
