Clerk is named in 49 of 50 AI answers on developer auth. Auth0, WorkOS, Supabase Auth, Firebase Auth, Kinde and NextAuth / Auth.js follow, split by model.

Clerk is the auth product AI models name most. It appears in 49 of 50 recorded answers, opens 29 of them and ranks first of 17 tracked vendors. The alternatives the models name most often are Auth0 (47 of 50), WorkOS (40), Supabase Auth (37), Firebase Auth (21), Kinde (17) and NextAuth / Auth.js (14). Each entry below says who should switch and why, using the 2026-09 edition. The page measures presence in answers and does not test the products.

Clerk sits first in the category on every count. It was named in 49 of 50 answers (Clerk 98%) and named first in 29 of 50 (Clerk 58%), with an average position of 1.92. Each of the ten models has Clerk as its most-named product.

Nine of the ten models name Clerk in all five of their answers. Sonar Reasoning Pro names it in four. The answers name it for one job: fast, managed sign-in for React and Next.js apps, with prebuilt screens. ChatGPT’s Next.js answer opened with “Default choice: use Clerk”. clerk.com was cited 31 times in the recorded answers.

That leaves a buyer who already knows Clerk with a narrow question. Which name do the models reach for when Clerk is not the fit? The six entries below answer it in measured order.

Pick Auth0 over Clerk when enterprise SSO, compliance or identity federation drives the choice, because that is the job the recorded answers give it.

Measured: named 47 of 50 (Auth0 94%), first 4 of 50 (Auth0 8%), average position 3.49. Category rank 2 of 17.

Auth0 is the near-constant second name. Seven of the ten models name it in every answer, and none names it fewer than four times. GPT-5.6 Luna’s Next.js answer gives it the row for enterprise SSO, compliance and complex identity federation. The first count tells the other half of the story. Auth0 opens only 4 answers, so its named-versus-first gap is 86 points, the widest in the category. The models list it as the safe comparison and seldom lead with it.

Capterra’s directory describes Auth0 as supporting single sign-on, passwordless and social login. Logto’s Clerk page points readers to Auth0 for legacy enterprise integrations.

WorkOS is the alternative the models open with most. Its average position of 2.93 is the best of the six alternatives here. The B2B question is where it leads. ChatGPT, GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Luna, Claude Fable 5, Gemini and Perplexity all open their SSO answer with WorkOS or AuthKit. GPT-5.6 Luna put the switching case in one line: “Use WorkOS if you already have auth”. The recorded answers name AuthKit as a WorkOS product. The panel counts AuthKit as its own name, with 18 of 50 answers, and GPT-5.6 Sol names it in all five. workos.com drew 83 citations in the recorded answers, the third-highest host.

Pick Supabase Auth instead of Clerk if the app already runs on Supabase and Postgres, because the recorded answers tie it to that stack.

Measured: named 37 of 50 (Supabase Auth 74%), first 0 of 50 (Supabase Auth 0%), average position 4.24. Category rank 4 of 17.

Supabase Auth has the second-widest named-versus-first gap in the category, 74 points. The models name it often and open with it never. They treat it as a conditional pick. Claude Opus 5 stated the condition: “If you’re already on Supabase: just use Supabase Auth.” GPT-5.6 Luna’s Next.js table gives it the row for teams already using Supabase, Postgres and row-level security. The Google models are its strongest supporters. Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash name it in every answer.

Measured: named 21 of 50 (Firebase Auth 42%), first 1 of 50 (Firebase Auth 2%), average position 4.67. Category rank 5 of 17.

Firebase Auth divides the models, and the split runs inside families. GPT-5.6 Luna names it in 4 of 5 answers, while ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 Sol name it once each. Claude names it four times, against one from Claude Opus 5. Perplexity gave the reason it surfaces: “a good speed-first choice for apps already built on Firebase/Google Cloud”. Three comparison answers, from GPT-5.6 Luna, Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro, put it on their opening shortlist. Sonar Reasoning Pro’s comparison answer lists it first. Outside those stack and shortlist cases, the models seldom reach for it.

5. Kinde

Pick Kinde instead of Clerk if you are starting a B2B SaaS app that needs organisations, SSO and roles from day one, the case two Sonar Reasoning Pro answers route to it.

Measured: named 17 of 50 (Kinde 34%), first 4 of 50 (Kinde 8%), average position 4.18. Category rank 7 of 17.

Kinde has the narrowest model spread of the six. No OpenAI model names it, and neither does Claude. Claude Opus 5 and Gemini name it in 4 of 5 answers each. When it does appear it often leads. Its 4 first mentions match Auth0’s from far fewer names. Its site carries weight in the answers too. kinde.com is the most-cited host in the recorded answers, with 99 citations. For an Australian buyer, one detail on Kinde’s own page matters.

Measured: named 14 of 50 (NextAuth / Auth.js 28%), first 2 of 50 (NextAuth / Auth.js 4%), average position 4.5. Category rank 9 of 17, level with Stytch on names and ahead of it on first mentions.

NextAuth / Auth.js is the open-source library on this list. Claude names it in 3 of 5 answers, and Claude’s Next.js answer opens its list with it. ChatGPT never names it. Every other model names it once or twice. The dev.to post that ranks third for this query tests Auth.js as an open-source Clerk alternative. That post describes Auth.js as free and self-hosted. It also reports that Auth.js has become part of Better Auth. The panel tracks Better Auth separately, with 13 of 50 names and 1 first mention.

Where the models disagree

The models agree on the leader and split on almost everything after it. Each cell counts how many of that model’s five answers named the product.

The Google models name the alternatives freely. Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash name WorkOS and Supabase Auth in every answer. The Google family also names Kinde (70% of Google answers). The OpenAI models never name Kinde.

Firebase Auth splits inside families. GPT-5.6 Luna names it four times while its two OpenAI siblings name it once each. The Anthropic models split the same way, with Claude on four and Claude Opus 5 on one. Kinde splits the Anthropic family further still: Claude Opus 5 names it four times and Claude never does.

Perplexity names Supabase Auth least, in 2 of 5, and the Perplexity family names it in half its answers (Supabase Auth 50%). Sonar Reasoning Pro is the only model that left Clerk out of one answer.

A buyer who asks one assistant will see a different shortlist from a buyer who asks another. Kinde shows it plainly. It is a regular answer from Claude Opus 5 and Gemini and absent from every ChatGPT answer.

How the sample was built

The sample is 10 models x 5 fixed prompts = 50 recorded answers, one answer per model and question, run on 2 September 2026 for the 2026-09 edition. The five questions, verbatim:

The families and their answer counts are OpenAI with 15 (GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT as GPT-5.6 Terra, GPT-5.6 Luna), Anthropic with 15 (Claude Opus 5, Claude as Claude Sonnet 5, Claude Fable 5), Google with 10 (Gemini as Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash) and Perplexity with 10 (Perplexity as Sonar Pro, Sonar Reasoning Pro). How this sits against the Clerk alternatives guides

The guides that rank for “Clerk Alternatives” rank products for purchase, and most are written by vendors. The capture took Google’s Australian results on 28 September 2026 and fetched five pages. Four returned text.

The r/nextjs thread at position 2 returned a 403 error to the capture, so this page does not describe it.

The dev.to post at position 3 tests seven open-source tools. Its author settles on Better Auth for their next project. Of its seven, only Auth.js is among this page’s six alternatives. One hosting link in the post carries a referral code.

Kinde’s comparison page at position 4 is Kinde writing about Kinde. It states that Kinde is the best alternative to Clerk. Its plan tables set Kinde’s free and Pro plans against Clerk’s.

Capterra’s Australian directory page sits at position 5. It discloses that it may earn a referral fee when a reader visits a vendor. Its list defaults to a sponsored sort order. Its entries include Okta, JumpCloud, Passbolt and Cisco Duo alongside Auth0. Auth0 is the only product it shares with this page’s six.

Logto’s comparison page at position 6 is also vendor-written. It argues for an auth service built on open standards that a team can self-host. Its FAQ names Supabase Auth and Auth0 as further options. It dates its feature comparison to July 2026.

Positions 7, 8 and 10 are blog posts on the Descope, LoginRadius and WorkOS domains. Google’s own AI Overview on the same results page named Better Auth, Auth0 and Kinde as the top alternatives. The models on this panel noticed the pattern too. Claude Fable 5 warned that “most comparison articles are written by the vendors themselves”.

This page adds what those guides do not carry. It counts which names ten models produce across 50 recorded answers, shows how each model splits and places Clerk on the same counts as its alternatives.

What these counts cannot tell you

The counts measure presence in AI answers and nothing about product quality, uptime, support or price fairness. Being named differs from being recommended, because an answer can name a product to warn against it. Each model gave one answer per question, so a single answer can move a vendor by one count. The run is one dated snapshot from 2 September 2026. Names are matched as strings, which is why AuthKit and WorkOS sit on separate lines. Answers came through each model’s API, which can differ from its consumer chat app. All five prompts were in English.
