Where Reddit decides the answer: the categories AI models source from threads
Key findings
- Reddit was cited 1,058 times across 33 categories and ten models, second only to YouTube (2,669).
- Reddit was the single most cited source in AI video generation (128 citations) and app hosting for startups (57).
- Reddit citations concentrate in fast-moving and infrastructure categories: LLM observability (88), transactional email (58), product analytics (47), subscription billing (46), LLM APIs (45).
- Twelve categories had no Reddit citation among their top sources, including AI avatars, AI code review, AI coding agents, AI meeting notetakers, AI outbound and AI voice.
- The most cited subreddits, where the URL exposes one, were r/AI_Agents (39), r/SaaS (28), r/webdev (18), r/LangChain (17) and r/generativeAI (16).
Reddit was the top cited source in two categories and the second most cited host overall, with 1,058 citations against YouTube’s 2,669. Where YouTube leads in software with a tutorial economy, Reddit leads where the category is too new for settled reviews and where buyers are engineers comparing infrastructure.
In which categories did Reddit lead?
| Category | Reddit citations | Category leader | Providers agree on leader |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI video generation | 128 | Veo (100%) | Yes, all four |
| App hosting for startups | 57 | Vercel (92%) | Yes, all four |
Where else is Reddit heavily cited?
| Category | Reddit citations | Top source |

| Transactional email | 58 | mailtrap.io |
| Product analytics | 47 | amplitude.com |
| Subscription billing | 46 | youtube.com |
| LLM APIs | 45 | syncfusion.com |
| Automation platforms | 39 | youtube.com |
Developer categories where the top source is a comparison page on a vendor or content site, with Reddit as the second opinion.
Where is Reddit absent?
Twelve categories had no Reddit citation among their top sources, among them AI avatar video, AI code review, AI coding agents, AI meeting notetakers, AI outbound and AI voice generation. Most are the categories where YouTube is strongest; the models go to video reviews, not threads, for tools that demo well on screen.
Which subreddits are cited?
Where the cited URL exposes the subreddit (Gemini’s grounding redirects resolve to reddit.com without a path, so this undercounts), the most cited were r/AI_Agents (39), r/SaaS (28), r/webdev (18), r/LangChain (17), r/generativeAI (16), r/LocalLLaMA (15), r/startups and r/LLMDevs (13 each). The models cite the thread page, not an individual comment. A thread titled “Best X for Y?” with a dozen replies naming products is the unit retrieved.
What this means for a vendor
In infrastructure and new AI categories, the models read Reddit the way they read review sites in older markets. A vendor with no presence in the threads that answer its buyers’ questions is absent from the second most cited layer. The presence that counts is a real user naming the product in a “best X” thread; the models cite the thread, not the vendor.
Limitations
Host counts treat all Reddit URLs as one host; subreddit-level counts cover only URLs that expose a path. Reddit citation counts come mostly from Gemini and Perplexity. One edition.
