• Anthropic, 15 answers: Claude Opus 5, Claude and Claude Fable 5.
• Google, 10 answers: Gemini and Gemini 3.5 Flash.
• Perplexity, 10 answers: Perplexity and Sonar Reasoning Pro.

Each model answered these five questions once:

1. “What is the best payroll software for a startup with 10 employees? Name specific products.”
2. “Which payroll provider should a seed-stage US startup use?”
3. “Compare the top payroll tools for small tech companies.”
4. “I’m a founder hiring my first employees. What payroll service do you recommend?”

None of the five questions names Rippling or Deel. Both products had to come up on their own. The method sets out how answers are recorded and counted, and every answer sits in the category record.

What these counts cannot tell you

The counts measure presence in answers. They say nothing about product quality, uptime, support, pricing fairness or fit with a particular stack. Being named also differs from being recommended. Claude Opus 5, for example, names Deel for international hiring and then tells a team with only domestic staff to skip it.

Each model answered each question once, so every count rests on a single answer per model and question. The panel is one dated snapshot, the 2026-09 edition.
